PUBLISHED August 5th, 2017 06:00 am | UPDATED December 15th, 2024 09:47 pm
This week, celebrate the nation’s 52 years of independence at the country’s very first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Complement the exhilarating festivities with an oenophilic affair, an arts extravaganza that spans the entire civic district, and some local theatre, before ending the week off with a spectacular pool party at Orchard Road.
Villa Fiesta National Day
In its very first edition, the Villa Fiesta seeks to bring together a plethora of local brands and crafters, including local artist David Young and Singaporean label FIN Crafted Goods Co., in the magnificent grounds of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Look forward to revelling amidst the garden’s splendid flora and fauna, as you browse through the most intricate handmade pieces from Singapore’s finest crafters. The Halia Restaurant will also be serving up its signature Chilli Crab Spaghettini there, so you’ll be able to treat yourself – and your tummy – to a day out at the Botanic Gardens that is equally delectable and delightful.
1-Group Presents Wine Lust Journeys
Wine-lovers rejoice as the 1-Group will be bringing you 14 titillating wine adventures at its four popular dining restaurants throughout the month of August. In celebration of the joys of wine drinking, each of these ‘journeys’ will be specially tailored to its location, such that your wine experience is enhanced. For instance, Wine Lust in the Countryside will be showcasing some of the finest vintages to match the rustic, vineyard-like charm of The Summerhouse, whereas Wine Lust at the Peak will feature lush and modern flavours embodied by Stellar at 1-Altitude. Thus, with the ambience of your surroundings impeccably synchronised to your palate, you’ll most certainly be immersed in an experience like no other.
1-Group Presents Wine Lust Journeys will be happening from 1 to 31 August 2017, at various locations. For more information, check out their event page here.
Civic District Outdoor Festival
Watch the city come to life this weekend, as the National Gallery of Singapore presents an art extravaganza of astounding proportions with its inaugural Civic District Outdoor Festival. In the day, you’ll be able to enjoy a picnic on the Padang with Amanda Parer’s exquisite rabbit sculptures, or check out an artist’s market at Empress Lawn, where – who knows – you may just find an artistic creation for your own keepsake. But by night, witness the familiar facades of the most notable art institutions in Singapore being transformed into a spellbinding cosmic wonderland, for the multimedia projection tour, “Hemera’s Dream”. Bringing the art experience out of the museum and into the streets, this festival is certainly not one to be missed.
Ver Theatre presents Mother I (2)
A play about family, birth, death, and heartbreak, this local production is about as universal as it gets. Yet, as much as it seems relatable to all, the stories it tells are inexplicably personal, for the play’s multilingual script was written based on interviews conducted with twenty mothers, including the director and playwright, Grace Kalaiselvi’s own. Drawing from their testimonies, Mother I (2) seeks to question the notion of motherhood, and what it means to be a mother in this new and puzzling digital world. Promising both tears and laughter, this poignant piece makes for the ideal evening with your family.
Friends with Benefits Presents Lemonade
Close this exciting week off with a massive splash at the only pool party of such epic proportions you’ll find in the heart of Orchard Road. Curating the soundtrack to your afternoon will be some of the best local DJs, including Bar Canary’s own resident DJ, I.M.X, as well as Jamie React and DJ More. So why not grab your friends, and come beat the incessant summer heat with food, fun, and cheeky shenanigans?
