The SG50 buzz is well underway, even as we plod on through the sweltering summer heat of July. So head into the air conditioning with a comedy show or an original musical about our founding father or revel in the great outdoors with an ‘electric picnic’ at Fort Canning Park (special discounts for our readers!) this week – read on to see what we mean:
Don’t Give Face: Aliwal Arts Night Crawl
The third edition of the ever-intriguing Aliwal Arts Night Crawl is loosely themed around masks, hence the title (and the colloquial phrase) – don’t give face. Visitors are encouraged to don masks, and there’ll be plenty on sale at the Night Crawl. Festival goers can dabble in dance, music, theatre, literature and visual arts in over 10 locations. Highlights include drop-in mask painting, storytelling of Singaporean folk tales accompanied by mesmering soundscapes, a capella performances, and even an improvised ‘duel’ between a violinist and a contemporary dancer.
The Aliwal Arts Night Crawl takes place on Saturday, 25 July from 5pm till late in the Kampong Glam district. For more information about events and performance timings, see here.Â
 Singapore Favourite Food Village 2015
Rediscover a lost makan place at this year’s Singapore Favourite Food Village, a 10-day festival celebrating Singapore’s rich culinary heritage. Be transported you to the heyday of Ellenborough Market in the 1800s – 1960s with the re-creation of this historic ‘Teochew Market’, with 30 food carts rendered to look like hawker stalls from the old days. Enjoy Teochew meatballs, chive dumplings, braised duck rice and steamed pomfret while being treated to nostalgic Teochew Opera performances and live cooking demonstrations. Leave the plastic at home though, it’s cash payment only – dishes are priced from $2-$14.
The event takes place daily from 24 July to 2 August 2015, from 5pm to 11pm at Read Bridge, Clarke Quay. The traditional Teochew Opera will be performed every weekend from 24 July to 2 August 2015 by Tok Tok Chiang and Nam Hwa Teochew Opera Troupe. For more information, please see here.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow 2015Â
Having just finished a massive 100-show tour Down Under, the Comedy Roadshow arrives in Singapore on the Asian leg of its tour. This year’s stellar lineup features Andy Saunders, Dave Callan, Nick Cody, Urzila Carlson, and Melbourne musical comedy duo ElbowSkin. The mix of Australian stars and international discoveries is sure to leave to leave you and the rest of Kallang Theatre in stitches!
The event will take place on Thursday, 23 July, from 8pm onwards at Kallang Theatre. Tickets are from $45, and can be purchased at Sistic. For more information, please see here.
The LKY Musical
This highly anticipated musical follows the life of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew from his early days at Raffles College to his role in the founding of modern Singapore, tracing the story of this nation in the process. A labour of love by an international team of artists, the musical sees local thespian Adrian Pang in the titular role as Mr. Lee and and Sharon Au in the role of his cherished spouse, Ms. Kwa Geok Choo. Featuring music by Dick Lee and Olivier Award-winning lyricist Stephen Clarke; it’s a worthy celebration of the life, vision, and extraordinary leadership of Mr. Lee.

Garden Beats Festival
Billed as Singapore’s first ‘electric picnic’, the Garden Beats Festival will feature a lineup of both international and local artists to get you grooving in the serene surroundings of Fort Canning. Catch MÖWE, Naxxos, Stereo Express and Adrian Giordano, along with local sensations Vandetta, DJ KFC, Seng Wei and Ming. Scrumptious picnic food will be available, courtesy of Marco Marco, Kerbside Gourmet, Selva and, +39 Gelato bar. There’ll be games and art installations too, so grab tickets soon!
