Returning for its third edition in Singapore next Monday, Negroni Week has raised raised almost a million dollars worldwide for charitable causes since its inception in 2013. This year, from 5 to 11 June, the collaboration between Campari (the classic cocktail is one part Campari, one part gin, and one part sweet vermouth) and Imbibe magazine will see more than 60 bars in the Lion City coming up with interesting variations of the Negroni to help a cause of their choice.
Here are some of the highlights in an easy, daily bar-hop format:
5 June, Monday
Chase the Monday blues with some half-priced northern Pacific oysters at Humpback with Principal Bartender Cherrie Soh’s Shoreline Sipper ($20++), a refreshing twist on the Negroni with the addition of pineapple infused fortified wine and white peppercorn tincture. For dessert, take a five-minute stroll to The Library for Lukas Kaufmann’s Candy Negroni ($22++), which balances the bitterness of Campari with fairy floss and candy gin, or to The Cufflink Club for a banana-infused dark rum based Tarzan Italiano ($24++) by Andrew Goodall.
You’ll contribute: $1 to Alzheimer’s Disease Association (Humpback), $2 to The Children’s Aid Society (The Library), and $2 to The Food Bank Singapore (The Cufflink Club)
6 June, Tuesday
Social Hour happens at the bars at Marina Bay Sands every Tuesday from 6pm- to 9pm, so when you’ve indulged in their signature cocktails at 50% off, why not have a Negroni too? Made with strawberry infused Campari and fennel pollen steeped London dry gin, Osteria Mozza’s Seasonal Negroni ($20++) is definitely the one to start with. Then, head upstairs to Waku Ghin for a visually stunning Negroni Diablo ($25++), which is served with what seems like a float of bamboo carbon powder. Hit up Bread Street Kitchen last for their revolutionary Soft Serve Negroni ($20++).
You’ll contribute: $1 to Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore
7 June, Wednesday
If you’re a fan of Ah Sam Cold Drink Store, you’ll be glad to hear that they’re doing an Ah Sam’s Reunion from 6pm on Wednesday! Expect to see Sim Sze Wei (currently at Atlas Bar), Loga Raj (currently at Fat Prince), Nick Kishore (who’ll be at soon-to-be-open Five Ten), and of course, Sam Wong himself. Can’t make it? Ah Sam’s bartender Edwin Poh will be serving up the Groni-Sour ($24+) – the sour comes from pink grapefruit juice, lime juice, and grapefruit tonic water – throughout the week too.
Those still up for more, pop by for a nightcap at Skinny’s Lounge. Besides giving them credit for the most attention-grabbing photo of all the participating bars, Cheryl Tng’s Brogroni ($20 nett) replaces gin with rosé champagne for a more refreshing Negroni experience.
You’ll contribute: $4 to Ren Ci Hospital (Ah Sam’s Reunion) and $1 to The Red Pencil (Skinny’s Lounge)
8 June, Thursday
Come Thursday, the folks at Sugarhall will be hosting My Apron for Your Cause. Four bartenders have worked with local designer Fahmy Ishak from FIN Crafted Goods Co. to come up with the designs of their aprons, and these customized pieces will be auctioned off – it starts during the event and closes online two days later – to raise even more money for the charities. Those who enjoy fruitier cocktails can look forward to the grape-influenced 2/1 Kyoho Negroni ($20++) by Symphony Loo of Neon Pigeon with Kyoho grape infused sweet vermouth and honey grape liqueur, as well as the Hans Negroni ($22++) made with raspberry infused Campari and pineapple infused gin by Charmaine Ann Thio of 28 HongKong Street.
We love the Negroni jello served with Joe Schofield’s soundwave-aged Sonic Negroni ($22++) from Tippling Club. Sugarhall’s very own Rhyse Borland will be dishing out the Rosemary Negroni Cooler ($25++) – featuring overproof rum and passionfruit syrup – inspired by his grandmother.
You’ll contribute: $1 to Save the Children (Neon Pigoen), $1 to Singapore Association for Mental Health (28 HongKong Street), $2 to Hagar International (Tippling Club), $1 to Alzheimer’s Disease Association (Sugarhall)
9 June, Friday
Celebrate the weekend by popping bottles and bubbles at Employees Only and The Spiffy Dapper respectively. The former is the only participating bar with a 750ml large format Classic Negroni ($150++) while Pavel Zdarsky’s tasty concoction of strawberry infused Campari, gin, Moscato, and liquorice bitters ($24 nett) is carbonated in-house before serving with a side of pastry with strawberry Campari jam. Another creative cocktail in the area can be found at Bitters & Love; Stephy Lim’s Bitters Breakfast ($25+) pairs Earl Grey infused gin and Camapri with grapefruit and marmalade infused vermouth.
You’ll contribute: $2 to Action for Singapore Dogs (Bitters & Love), $1 to Water4 (The Spiffy Dapper), $20 to Save Our Street Dogs (Employees Only)
10 June, Saturday
Relatively new to Kampong Glam, Flying Monkey scores points by donating a whopping $10 per Aged Monkey ($20+) by Head Bartender Kannan Pillai. Made with Indian dark rum, the cocktail is matured for 21 days for an extra smooth Negroni. For a more intimate drinking experience in the neighbourhood, head over to Shin Gi Tai for a Negroberry ($25+), prepared with a delicious Japanese strawberry infused gin by owner Anthony Zhong. If your sweet tooth needs a little love, check out Tess Bar & Kitchen. Boo Jing Heng’s The Matchmaker ($22++), well, matchmakes bourbon, Campari, and Souchong tea infused vermouth with a spiced Campari ice cream dotted with cinnamon roll – yum.
You’ll contribute: $10 to Singapore Children’s Society (Flying Monkey), $5 to Noah’s Ark CARES (Shin Gi Tai), and $3 to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (Tess Bar & Kitchen)
Negroni Week is happening 5-11 June 2017 at more than 60 bars across the island. For more information, please see Negroni Week’s website.
