Overdoughs – A fresh, hidden find… (closed)

Oh yes, we do love our hidden gems at City Nomads, and this is a real treat. Overdoughs, owned and run by the same guys who brought you Artichoke, is a tiny 10 seater bakeshop and deli located at Blk 261 Waterloo Centre #01-24 on Waterloo St.

Honestly, unless a friend was bringing you there or you’d heard about it somewhere, I doubt you’d ever find it! It’s hidden down the left side of the hawker centre and the signage is very small.

And what do they serve? Boom! See below and queue mouth watering.

Overdoughs is primarily a takeout place but there is room to sit, if you’re lucky. It’s basically one big table with benches – space for about 10 bums.

As one would expect from the Chef from Artichoke, the fare here has a Mediterranean twist. Shown below starting from top left going clockwise is a hearty serving of hummus with olives, capsicum and tomato salsa with Spanish anchovies, a walnut and pumpkin dip, beetroot tzatziki and some thickly cut Turkish beef pastrami.

All of this served with some freshly baked Lebanese flat bread.

It’s all pretty simple. Get a takeaway box with some bread and your choice of 3 dips for $10 nett. Extra servings are $3 each…so being the fatty I am (God bless gyms) I decided to order pretty much one of everything….and then some desserts afterwards…mwahaha.

Highlights for me were the beetroot tzatziki – an interesting variation on a dish that is usually primarily yoghurt…Honestly, I can’t really figure out what makes this ‘tzatziki’ but it sure is tasty nonetheless, a perfect pairing with the thick beef pastrami. Oh mama! Next time I’m in the area I’m going to be getting some to take home. Smokey, salty and juicy…just delicious. It’s how pastrami should taste and so often doesn’t.

Finally, go for the walnut and pumpkin dip. It’s really quite excellent. I’d love to try it in pie form with a pastry base and a glass of lush red wine…

Sadly, I cannot speak so highly about the desserts, which being completely honest were very disappointing apart from the coffee milk pudding. Not a scratch on the sweets at the sister restaurant, Artichoke.

Still, Overdoughs is totally worth a visit, not just because of it’s neighborhood vibes and location. The food is tasty, fresh, healthy and quite cheap.
