Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit: Review

Standing tall like a giant amongst midgets on Thonglor Soi 57, Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit is a relatively new property – just slightly over two years old. Regardless of whether you’re in Bangkok for business or pleasure (we never see the harm in combining both), this hotel’s worth checking into.

To start off, as real estate agents are fond of saying: location, location, location. The fact that the hotel is really close to Thonglor BTS and in the hipster neighbourhood of Thonglor itself, bumps Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit up high on my hotel list. Basically, this means it’s easy to get around the city, while the cool bars, cafes, and restaurants of Thonglor and Ekkamai are just a short taxi ride (or an easy walk) away.
At 36 square metres (roughly 388 square feet), the Deluxe Room is no shoebox unit, but you don’t get the feeling of real hotel spaciousness. However, I liked that they tried to separate the bathroom from the bedroom with sliding dark wooden panels – a personal plus since I dislike sleeping in a bed facing any sort of mirror.

If I had to nitpick the room, one thing that could do with improvement would be the pillows. Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit, your rooms – at least the Deluxe ones – need fluffier pillows that complement your comfortable bed.
I’m a true sucker for bathtubs and I loved the circular tub, especially since you can enjoy Bangkok’s skyline and cityscape while soaking in a hot bath that soothes your aching muscles from urban exploration. For the ultimate indulgence, bring your choice of boozy beverage into the bath and zone out – who says you can’t escape from the city, in the city? Just note that the ventilation in the glass panelled shower/tub area is not that great, so either leave the glass door open or run your bath at a lower temperature.

The hotel’s daily buffet breakfast at 57th Street on the ground floor is excellent in variety and decent in quality. As expected of a hotel with certain calibre and standards, the requisite ‘live’ stations for eggs, pancakes, and breakfast noodles were present, so if you like your brekkie a la minute, knock yourself out! This is the only buffet I’ve been to that offered red velvet waffles for brekkie – bonus points from me for effort.
Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit’s Octave Rooftop Bar
As for other dining destinations, we’ve heard that The District is one of the best steakhouses in Bangkok so we’ll be back to try that. The Octave Rooftop Lounge and Bar is worth a go if you’re looking for drinks and nibbles with a view – it’s less crowded and less touristy with better vibes than a famous rooftop bar I shall not name.

Will I go back? Definitely. It’s not cheap, but the location and all-round quality does it for me.
