What To Look Out For at Singapore Food Festival 2016

Food is undoubtedly an important aspect in Singaporean culture, so it makes sense that the annual Singapore Food Festival strives to become better year after year, even after running 23 editions since 1994. Now, the premier food festival ups the ante once again with a record line-up of 18 gastronomic experiences on offer!
Themed ‘Savour the Past, Taste the Future’, this year takes you on a culinary journey that spans the ages. From a shophouse-lined street to an outdoor food truck park experience, here are the highlights of Singapore Food Festival 2016.
STREAT
We’re sure you’ve heard of this one. Singapore Food Festival’s signature event, STREAT features an all-star cast of hawkers and chefs to showcase the best of local street food. Look out for iconic creations from establishments such as Candlenut, The Disgruntled Chef, and Casuarina Curry Restaurant. This year also sees an exciting collaboration between international celebrity chef Susur Lee, TungLok Heen’s senior executive chef Ken Ling, and Labyrinth’s chef-owner Han Liguang – which will culminate in an exclusive six-hands, five-course dinner menu.
When: 15 & 16 July 2016, 5pm to 10.30pm daily

Hawker-Inspired Cocktail Pairings at Tippling Club
Chef Ryan Clift will be putting his modern fine-dining take on local dishes found in well-known hawker centres across Singapore. With a sumptuous collision of local and global flavours, Tippling Club‘s pairing menu is as playful as it is innovative. Awaiting you in Bin 38 (Tippling Club’s exclusive test-kitchen, cocktail bar, and private dining room) are luxurious pairings like Newton’s Oyster Omelette with Pomelo Lemongrass Gimlet, East Coast Chilli Crab with Chilli Rose Sour, and Maxwell Chicken Rice with Ginger Yuzu Buck.

Singapore Favourite Food Village
Head down to the open field opposite Raffles Hospital and take a ‘wok’ through Singapore’s culinary heritage. From traditional food preparations to modern interpretations of quintessential local dishes, the Favourite Food Village features 20 culinary partners across three zones – our favourite cultural dishes will be facing off against their modern interpretations at Old Favourites (Nyonya Kueh Delivery, Kampong Cafe) and Modern Takes (Big Street Singapore, Churros Factory), or enjoy a relaxed dining experience at the On-The-Go (The Travelling Cow, Kerbside Gourmet) alfresco area with food trucks and pop-up cafes.

Open Stoves by Timbre+
Take a look at a chef’s world behind kitchen walls as Timbre+ residents Jeremy Cheok and Christian Calledo collaborate with guests chefs like Tan Huang Ming (Park Bench Deli) and Bjorn Shen (Artichoke) to televise life cooking demonstrations to the public. Bringing together different cuisine styles and cooking techniques, they’ll be developing new and innovative localicious dishes such as Prata Taco with Stewed Tripe and Cebu BellyChon. In true Timbre spirit, there’ll be a variety of gastro-fun activities like live music, neon beer pong, Beer Mile, and other activities for the family.

The 50 Cents Fest!
Were you born before the 70s? Relieve the nostalgia of dining along shophouse-lined streets at Chinatown Food Street, which will be transformed into a bustling road filled with street hawkers, buskers, costumed entertainers, and oldies music from a bygone era. And of course, there’ll be food…at a mega cheap price of 50 cents! Expect more than 30 iconic local dishes from our parents’ era such as the UFO (Fried Oyster Cake), Kok Kok Mee, Rickshaw Noodles, Ice Ball, and Mee Teh.
When: 30 & 31 July 2016, 3pm to 11pm am 11am to 11pm respectively
Where: Chinatown Food Street, Smith Street
Cost: Free entry – $0.50 to $2.50 for a tasting portion
