China World Summit Wing: A Spectacular Stay in Beijing

The best part about a hotel that starts from the 64th floor? You’re guaranteed a damn fine view of the city, regardless of which room you get.

EXTERIOR VIEW!

Dominating the Beijing skyline, the dazzling glass-paneled skyscraper that is China World Tower serves as an allegory of the Middle Kingdom’s frantic economic development. And China World Summit Wing – a Shangri La property – inhabits levels 64 to 80 of the building, above China World Shopping Mall and China World Trade Centre.

While we were in Beijing recently, we decided to take advantage of their Super Summit Package, where a night in the Executive Room starts from RMB1, 988 (US$297) per night – but you’ll receive the same value in dining and spa credits. So whether you’re a visitor to the city who’ll like to kick back for a day or two, or a Beijinger looking for a staycation, you can’t go wrong with this!

All 278 well-appointed rooms boast floor-to-ceiling windows with classic dark wooden décor and Chinese touches (like cabinets and prints. Our Grand Premier Room was located on the 64th floor, which meant we didn’t need to switch to the other bank of elevators that caters specifically to hotel guests.

At 75 square metres (807 square feet), it’s pretty much the size of a one-bedroom apartment in Singapore – how’s that for spacious? Even their Executive Room stands at 55 square metres (592 square feet). With 800 threadcount cottten sheets, a Nespresso coffee machine, as well as daily turndown refreshments, we know we settled in for a comfy stay in China World Summit Wing.

Besides the 40-inch TV in the room, their shiny, marble bathroom (stocked with L’Occitane toiletries) also feature a 15-inch bathroom mirror LCD television so you can catch up on new/soap operas/variety shows during your toilette.

Time to go blow all that credit.

Located on the fourth floor, The Red Chamber is a contemporary Chinese restaurant dealing in regional cuisines of Guangdong, Huaiyang, Sichuan, and Beijing. If you haven’t had Peking duck yet, The Red Chamber’s version is more than worthy.

Try the uber refreshing cherry tomatoes infused with plums and the fried shrimp patties for some crunch. Those looking for something flavourful yet soothing should go for the lobster porridge.

Spa aficionados will not be disappointed at CHI, The Spa, Beijing’s highest spa retreat at level 77. With only 6 tranquil suites inspired by the Shangri-La legend (supposedly a place of personal peace, enchantment, and well-being), check in for a trip to restoring body and mind.

For sundowner drinks, we reckon nowhere is better than Atmosphere Bar, the crowning jewel of China World Summit Wing loftily perched on level 80. Again claiming the superlative of being the highest bar in Beijing, one can see Tian’anmen Square to the mountains encircling the city on a clear day. Cocktails average about RMB 100 and beers about RMB 80. Their Tsingtao beers are specially packaged for Shangri-La – testament to the brand’s presence in the country.

Okay, so being in the middle of it all is not cheap; we might have overspent on that RMB1, 988 credit. But in our defense, we had an excellent bout of indulgence (read: eat, sleep, drink, repeat) so China World Summit Wing is definitely more than just for the business travellers.

China World Summit Wing is located at No.1 Jianguomenwai Avenue, Beijing, 100004, China, p. (86 10) 8571 6688, e. [email protected]. The Super Summit Package is available daily till 31 Aug 2016 and valid Fri-Sun from 1 Sep – 31 Dec 2016.
