Edible Garden City has been designing, building and maintaining gardens for 9 years, with 260 edible gardens built on our sunny island. We are immensely excited to launch the “Grow a Healthy, Productive Edible Garden” workshop, a full-day in-depth class on soil-based edible plant cultivation. We are excited to share our experience and skillset with new and aspiring gardeners!

This class is suitable for:
Beginner gardeners looking at developing their gardening skills.
Home gardeners that wish to deep-dive into soil-based growing, using natural methods.
Gardeners interested in growing edible varieties that grow well in our natural climate.

The workshop will be taught by our team of experienced urban farmers and urban farming educators, and will be set within Edible Garden City’s Queenstown Farm – where we grow a myriad of local produce types for chefs and home cooks.

Besides theoretical knowledge, our trainers will impart practical tips, conduct demonstrations and lead participants in hands-on activities. Participants should come dressed for outdoor activity, and be prepared to get their hands dirty working with soil and plants.

The workshop will cover the following topics in detail:

Topic 1: Starting Right
Choose suitable edibles to grow.
Learn about different plants, their edibles parts & their medicinal or culinary uses.
Propagate through seeds & choosing your sowing method.
Transplanting seedlings.
Prepare stem-cuttings for effective propagation.
Select containers & planters.

Topic 2: Caring for Your Edible Garden
Understand what growing conditions plants need.
Make a good soil mix.
Watering – different methods & knowing how much or little to water.
Identify stress or deficiencies in plants.
Discover weeds; weeding, & why it matters.
Learn how pruning & harvesting leads to healthy, productive plants.
Select, use & care of basic gardening tools.
Adopt a garden maintenance routine.

Topic 3: Nutrients, Fertilisers and Pest Control
Identify essential plant nutrients.
Explore signs of nutrient deficiencies.
Choose fertilisers and use them well.
Discover composting & vermicomposting.
Manage common plant diseases.
Identify common garden pests.
Control and prevent pests using organic methods.

By the end of the class, participants should be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to:
Confidently start and maintain your own home edible garden, troubleshooting effectively.
Enjoy the fruits of your labour – the bountiful harvests!
Benefit from the physical, mental and emotional benefits of growing your own food at home.
