Genesis is a photography exhibition showcasing 245 black and white images of our planet by world-renowned photographer Sebastiáo Salgado. The display is a culmination of Salgado’s photographic works taken at over 30 different destinations from 2004 to 2011. Dramatic, moving, and grand, the photos present powerful images of our world and the intricate association between Man, animal, and the environment that we all have a duty to protect.
Of man
These are powerful portraits of ancient tribes and human communities showing their ways of life that has been passed down since the dawn of man, untouched by technology and stripped bare of every trace of modern day life. Colours cannot portray the strength and vigour of these nomadic tribes – they cut through and transcend the fibres of colouration, time, and space. Shamans of the Kamayura tribe, the Zo’é people, women bearing lip plates in Africa, all stare back at viewers with unmatched resilience and spirit. Their piercing gazes tell of incredible culture and traditions, let yourself be silently drawn to their stories.
Of animal
Think reindeer, jaguars, elephants and every other mystical animal that roam the unthreaded landscapes of the planet. These majestic creatures captured on film in their native glory, evoke the senses of viewers with immense intensity and beauty – bound to take your breath away at every turn. View and marvel in the surrealism of seeing tens of thousands of penguins perched on an iceberg, silhouettes of galloping zebras, magnificent giraffes backlit by the setting sun, and many more.
Of environment
Prepare yourself for stunning images of unspoiled land and seascapes, stretching as far, and even further, than the eyes can see. We were struck in awe because Salgado is truly a master of light and shadow, angles, and dramatics. Every new picture of the Amazon, of Africa, Planet South, and sanctuaries from around the world are unbelievable, magical scenes that undeniably make you feel small. They form a visual tribute to the unblemished faces of nature and humanity, in all its pristine conditions.
Genesis is a stunning mosaic of nature, of man, animal, and the environment in all its unspoiled grandeur. Missing this exhibition would mean missing out on your journey to humanity’s rediscovery of itself in nature. Seriously, we’re not exaggerating.
Genesis is on show at the National Museum of Singapore from 26 April to 27 July 2014, 10am to 6pm daily. Admission is free. For more information, see the National Museum of Singapore’s website here.
