Yoga, Crossfit, MMA, Zumba, everyone seems to be doing either one these days. If you’re tired of peoples’ yoga selfies in impossible headstands, want to try something different and learn a new skill at the same time, Krav Maga might be the thing for you.
A hand-to-hand combat system developed by a Hungarian Jew during the Nazi era and used by the Israeli military today, what Krav Maga Singapore teaches is adapted for civilians in an everyday context. Highly useful when you travel!
Krav Maga teaches you how to react, adapt and get out of a situation in the fastest way possible. A typical lesson begins with warm-ups, before going into the techniques of the day’s lesson, which can be anything from basic striking to defenses against various types of knife attacks, chokes, grabs and defenses from the ground. You are then put to the test with a realistic drill designed to pressure you. It was definitely a relief to know that most students don’t have martial arts backgrounds and go all Bruce Lee on you.
Techniques are based on the body’s natural reactions, only more refined. For instance, you will raise your hands to fend off a stab coming towards you. The Krav Maga way teaches you to strike it away explosively, while at the same time punching the attacker. It may feel awkward at first, but as head instructor Sascha Soliano, who has had over 10 years’ experience in the military, likes to say, ‘It’s not rocket science; it’s about repetition.’
You’ll feel the adrenaline coursing through you during a multiple attacker scenario, which may leave you with a few bruises that you can wear with pride, and it is also kind of addictive that makes you want to keep going back for more.
