From international brands to local concepts, Singapore continues to be a gastro-hub offering the best from every corner of the world. This month, get a taste of Japanese favourites, Filipino flavourings, new speakeasys and coffee chains from China and Canada. Here are the new restaurants, cafés and bars in Singapore this April 2023.
Restaurants
iKKAGOYO
Decked out in Sukiya-Zukuri style, kaiseki concept iKKAGOYO is the new kid on the Amoy Street block. Inspired by a Japanese proverb that means ‘one flower opening up to five petals’, you’ll find Hyogo native, Chef Mitsutaka Sakamoto at the helm. Look forward to an array of unique and innovative flavours made with fresh in-season ingredients and panache. Premium Japanese ingredients highlighted in their 12-course menu (S$338++ per person) alongside their signature kombu dashi (kelp-seaweed broth) includes eel, skipjack tuna, abalone, and uni.

Salt & Palm
Hailing from Sydney, Salt & Palm has finally opened its doors in the idyllic district of Joo Chiat Road in Singapore. Bringing with it a progressive approach to modern Asian cuisine, the brand is the brainchild of managing director and CEO of Blue Waves – Mark Soetantyo, and restaurateur extraordinaire and Executive Chef sister Natasya Soetantyo. Dig into their signature Prawn Bisque Pasta (S$32), as well as the bold Porchetta (S$32), featuring Australian pork belly cooked in a rich coconut gravy with Balinese spice. Desserts are spun the same way, with full vegan iterations of Crème Brulee (S$15) with jackfruit, and Pavlova (S$18) sporting aquafaba meringue and mango cream.

Le Bon Funk
After five years at the bustling Club Street, Le Bon Funk has opened its second outlet at the lively Holland Village. The new day-to-night kitchen and wine bar is a 68-seater space featuring a breezy al fresco terrace. The Holland Village branch brings a tight curation of exciting wines, complemented with produce-led plates inspired by the chefs’ travels and diverse background. Chow down on the handmade in-house daily Leek Ravioli ($42) with smoked carrot and pea tendrils; or the tender Lamb Neck ($48), served with rapini and grilled gnocchi.

Eden
Celebrating the best of Asia, Pullman Singapore Orchard brings us another exciting eatery to Singapore’s prime shopping belt. A lush glasshouse retreat, Eden Restaurant approaches the region’s cuisine through a refined, modern lens. Expect vibrant dishes such as the Tuna Ceviche with Ikura (S$26++), which takes inspiration from the Issan staple of koi pla, a juicy Satay Lamb Rack (S$40++) accompanied with charred broccolini and homemade peanut sauce, as well as the Szechuan T-Bone Steak (S$138++, serves two). In addition to the a la carte menu, Eden is also offering a two-course Set Lunch at S$35++ per person.

Cafes
luckin coffee
Founded in 2017 in Bejing, luckin is China’s largest coffee chain and a pioneer of technology-driven retail. Its first overseas outposts in Singapore at Ngee Ann City and Marina Square join over the community of over 8,000 stores in its home country. The minimalist blue-and-white stores will boast 100% cashier-less stores, where customers can select, purchase, and pick up their coffee through a mobile app for both dining in and takeaway. Check out their famous Coconut Latte, alongside selections from its ‘Little Black Cup’ Specialty SOE coffee series and luckin Exfreezo™ series.

Tim Hortons
It seems to be a month for beloved international coffee chains with famous Canadian coffee-house, Tim Hortons also making its debut in Singapore. Joining hands with Japanese trading firm Marubeni Corporation, the brand plans to expand to many more locations across Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia in the next decade. Though we are still awaiting a menu launch and other details, some highlights from the North American menu include hearty breakfast sandwiches, wraps, donuts and themed seasonal drinks. Cafe USAGI Tokyo
For authentic Japanese ice cream, green tea, and mochi, Café USAGI Tokyo has just opened shop at Suntec City. Japanese Chef and Creative Director Yuka Shigeno takes inspiration from the likes of nature, flowers and buildings, and uses only all-natural ingredients and colouring in her dishes. Try the soft and chewy Handmade Daifuku, Waffles with Kuromitsu or Maple Syrup and the rich signature Japanese Flavoured Handcrafted Ice Cream made with imported Hokkaido milk. Flavours include Hokkaido Milk & Vanilla, Ceremomial Uji Matcha, Samurai Blue Sea Salt and more.

Bars
Synthesis 食拿酒稳
A hot new speakeasy at Suntec City, Synthesis 食拿酒稳 is a Traditional Chinese Medicine-themed restaurant bar that seeks to offer a nourishing experience – think harmonious combinations of ingredients that restore balance and boost your overall wellbeing. At the Insta-friendly spot, look forward to wholesome bites like Pani Puri with Cold Assam Curry, as well as Iberico Pork & Prawn Ngoh Hiang. Wash down the snacks with the likes of the whisky-based Uncle Tom’s “Kopi O” and Goji-Roni, a White Negroni twisted with goji berries. Watch out for entertaining live music performances and energetic dance tracks.

Tajine
Deliciae Hospitality Management presents Tajine, a new authentic Moroccan tapas and cocktail bar at Robertson Quay this April. Drawing culinary influences from Moroccan cuisine as well as the Mediterranean basin and Africa, expect meticulously handmade and tasty slow-cooked dishes. Designed for sharing, dishes include The Mixed Platter featuring Zaalouk (grilled eggplant), Khizou Mchermel (cooked carrot salad), and Bessara (fava bean hummus drizzled with extra virgin olive oil). For tipples, look to their sweet and tangy take on the Martini with Sumactini, whilst the Marrakesh is a refreshing blend of gin, mezcal, passionfruit, and orgeat.
