“A free spirit with a big voice” MTV Iggy
The multi-faceted Vanessa Fernandez, who also goes by the moniker Vandetta, is a singer, radio personality on Lush 99.5, one half of electronic duo Octover and part of audio-visual collective Syndicate.
In her years as a vocalist, Vanessa was a member of the now defunct high profile hip hop group Urban Xchange, which was nominated for at MTV Asia Award in 2002, as well as Parking Lot Pimp.
In 2010, she joined Syndicate, performing on the opening day of Gilles Peterson Worldwide Festival 2011 in Sete, France with veteran producer DJ Kiat, and at the Singapore leg of the festival with Jason Tan in the same year. Under the Syndicate label, she and Jason formed Octover and released their eponymous debut album in 2013.
In her solo project as Vandetta, the singer has received positive reviews from influential media such as Pitchfork, MTV Iggy and the LA Weekly. Released in 2013, her debut Vandetta EP comprises five spaced-out tracks that blend minimalist R&B with downtempo electronic ambience, which featured her voice as the only instrument on the record. Recently she was one of only 3 local acts at the Laneway Festival 2014. Join the sensuous singer as she unleashes her alter ego in an evening where her influences in urban, hip hop and electronic music all come into one. Expect a night of drum loops and samples built on the sensibilities of old school hip hop, coupled with Asian sounds and featuring her soulful vocals.
