Mash-Up….Style with swagger

The Mash-Up Collective are those cool kids, you know, the ones that you really want to be friends with. They aren’t tough to spot at fashion events, just look out over the ‘oh so chic/ très boring’ fashion uniform of monochrome and serious faces and they’re the ones having a hoot, looking like they don’t give a crap about conventional fashion do’s and don’ts! Throwing bright, clashing shades together; atypical shapes and adornments; chunky accessories; a huge dose of fun; big heart; and a whole lot of swagger. If M.I.A. knew about them, she’d be rocking their stuff for sure.
This trio of young Singaporean designers, Daniela Monasterios-Tan, Nathanael Ng and Shaf Amis’aabudin met while studying fashion at LASALLE College of the Arts and had a meeting of minds…slightly random, creative, zany minds! Their label, Mash -Up is a manifestation of their common love for music, partying, and fashion that they believe should be fun, whimsical, sometimes downright silly and definitely not so serious.
And it seems that their mission to inject a little colour in to our daily lives is working a charm, having been selected to participate in the Parco Next NEXT project which is a respected and proven platform for up and coming designers in Singapore, and show at Blueprint. They are now stocked in TopShop – which is kinda huge – and they are also releasing 2 t-shirts with UNIQLO at the end of the month.
The Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, Locos in Tokyo is a homage to the curious influence of low-rider Mexican-American (or Chicano) culture in Japan….who knew?! Their unequivocal street style is injected with prints and appliqué inspired by both of these cultures, think kimono-inspired detailing and Japanese fonts alongside colourful Mexican inspired fabrics and images of low riders- you know, those cars that bounce!
Mash-Up as a collective and ideology, brings together colourful and contrasting cultures and references to create ideas and themes that are vibrant, fun and full of stories, Mash-Up as a collection is quirky, loud, infectious and for those with a big personality; hugely wearable and super fun. Don’t be shy now, get mashed up!
Mash-Up is available at Parco Marina Bay, Level 2, Millenia Walk, 9 Raffles Blvd, Singapore, 039596 and Actually, 29A Seah St, Singapore 188385.
