Greek Master Artist’s second solo exhibition in Singapore and Asia continues to raise funds for Singapore art and artists
Ecstatic Breath of Freedom by Nikos Kypraios marks the Greek master artist’s second solo exhibition in Singapore and in Asia. Comprising 25 striking works that use voiceless fishes as the subject to symbolise humanity whose voice has been muzzled by media noise and material pursuits, Nikos Kypraios urges viewers to be mindful of the suppression of nature that is endangering our very ability to live and breathe.
The exhibition also marks the artist’s continuous effort in supporting Singapore’s art and artists. His first solo exhibition held in 2013 – entitled Interior Interiors of the Soul: The Byzantine Icons of Nikos Kypraios – raised S$15,000 that went towards supporting contemporary 3-dimensional visual arts centre Sculpture Square’s new programmes to promote local art and artists.
This year, Ecstatic Breath of Freedom aims to raise S$30,000, to be donated to the International Young Artists Exchange fund that is set up to give promising young artists from disadvantaged backgrounds a chance to go on an arts education and exchange programme outside of their home country to further their growth, develop their talent and give them hope for a brighter future.
Nikos shares, ‘Young artists have so much potential. Nature births the young so life can continue. Young artists in particular are the lifeline to new art, new visions of art – the next wave of artistic creations. Nature and art are in their hands to love and preserve.’
In February 2013, Nikos spent time with 20 disadvantaged youths from The Little Arts Academy visual arts programme to teach and share his art with them. Returning this year, Nikos continues his desire to help young artists and gift proceeds from the sale of his art to the International Young Artist Exchange.
Nikos Kypraios: Ecstatic Breath of Freedom is happening from April 26 to May 6 at The Arts House. Art buyers and collectors are welcome to purchase the works to which part proceeds go towards the IYAE fund.
About Nikos Kypraios
Nikos Kypraios was born on the Aegean island of Samos, Greece in 1944.
In 1960, he left the island for Athens, where he studied and worked in the field of graphic arts. He was inspired at this time by the Aegean landscape and Byzantine art.
In 1972, during the period of the military junta in Greece, Nikos and his family immigrated to Melbourne, Australia where he focused on his artistic development. Although the choice to migrate was a forced one, the artist was most fortunate as his work blossomed in the inviting environment in Australia and he was rewarded with over 20 personal exhibitions at such prestigious galleries as Holdsworth Gallery (Sydney), Pinacotheca (Melbourne), Cooks Hill Gallery (Newcastle), Barry Stern Gallery (Sydney) and Australian Art Resources (Melbourne).
Nikos’s work has been exhibited globally including New York (Kouros Gallery), Nicosia, Cyprus (Gloria Gallery). Athens and Vienna. His works are in public, corporate and private collections around the world including the Marc Chagall Museum (Belarus), Valartis Bank (Austria) AG and Leepa Rattner Museum (Florida, USA)
The artist now divides his times between his studios in Athens and Samos in Greece as well as travelling extensively around the world both for exhibitions but also to seek further inspiration.
