Random Blends 2014: CALIBR8 – intriguing, playful & interactive

This digital art exhibition definitely sounds..random and mediocre enough, but visitors to Random Blends 2014: CALIBR8 are in for a surprise. Presenting artworks across different mediums including infographics, videos, interactive storytelling, posters, and board games, the collection is nothing short of fascinating and thought provoking.

A yearly exhibition showcasing works of undergraduates from the Communication and New Media department at the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, National University of Singapore, Random Blends 2014: CALIBR8 seeks to explore and redefine the relationship between visitors and the museum space with works that embody the convergence of art, technology, media, and entertainment. There is no compromise on both quality and quantity in the pieces, and we’re here to share our favourite displays from the show.

Thrills that Kill

This infographic shows that – contrary to popular beliefs – the world’s tallest and fastest roller coasters aren’t the most dangerous. Something else wills death upon roller coaster riders and you will find the answer to this mystery by searching within this insightful artwork.

Run, Doc, Run!

Help Doc run for his life in this modernised arcade game that explores both the opportunities and risks of genetic studies. The player is left with tricky questions and afterthoughts such as, do all scientific progress and experiments improve the lives of the masses? Does the end justify the means?

Hey Brother

A video showing snippets of interviews with army recruits, this humorous artwork offers tips on how to survive the dreaded two years of National Service. Take it with a pinch of salt though, their advice may not work for you guys!

Se7en the Reaper

An adaptation of the 1995 thriller film, Se7en, this interactive sequential art parody takes you through the ominous plot and offers a fresh perspective on the original movie. In the present-day context, the seven deadly sins have been given a modern twist that has a haunting yet entertaining effect on the visitor.

Project Syria

With ‘recipes’ of both proponents of the Syrian Civil War depicted, details of war strategies, damages, and parties involved are discussed visually in this art piece. Careful though, you might just lose your appetite after viewing this artwork.

Random Blends is exhibiting  from 1 March to 6 March 2014 at the ArtScience Galleries of the ArtScience Museum from 10am – 7pm on weekdays and weekends. Admission to the showcase is free.
