Solo exhibition by Eugene Soh

Chan Hampe Galleries presents Renaissance City new works by Singaporean artist Eugene Soh.
Eugene Soh’s images parody iconic works of art while providing a tongue-in-cheek commentary on contemporary life in Singapore. The many elements and characters in these works represent multiple narratives within a distinctly Singaporean context. Soh’s works were recently exhibited at the National Museum (ICON Martell Photography Prize 2014) and Singapore Art Museum (Sensorium 360).
Shot over multiple sessions, Soh’s latest work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Singapore was created in collaboration with Campus Magazine as an homage to Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte, by Georges Seurat. Like his previous photo composite works, all the models in the image were average everyday people, present on various Sunday afternoons, enjoying a weekend outing at Upper Pierce Reservoir. With elements of everyday life alongside uniquely Singaporean imagery, it’s another new take on an old classic. As Soh states, ‘Many things have changed since the 19th century when the original Sunday Afternoon was painted. I wanted to address those changes while reflecting upon current social developments and create an image that is recognisably Singaporean.”
Renaissance City runs from 11 December 2014 until 4 January 2015 at Chan Hampe Galleries, located at Raffles Hotel Arcade #01-21, 328 North Bridge Road. The exhibition is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am – 7pm. Admission is free. For enquires please call +65 6338 1962.
About the Artist
Eugene Soh is a recent graduate of Nanyang Technological University’s School of Art, Design and Media. He uses his technological expertise to manipulate various forms of digital art, constantly aspiring towards new ways to share his work. His distinct conversationalist style allows him to engage his audience with humor and grace.
Soh was a finalist in the Student Category at the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards in 2013. He was also a Nominee for the 2014 ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu award for photography.
