Uto Ughi

A living violin legend comes to Singapore!

Uto Ughi is considered one of Italy’s greatest living violinists and present heir of the Cremona violin school. He showed an extraordinary talent from an early age, giving his first public concert playing the monumental Bach Chaconne in Milan when he was only seven.

For Uto, “the violin is the instrument which best expresses the human condition because it has a “soul,” as the violin is particularly close to the human voice.”
Unlike most child prodigies, Uto continually evolves musically both as a performer, philosopher and social activist. Today, after more than half a century of international tours, recordings and gala appearances, he still maintains his strict regiment of daily practice and physical workouts. “A healthy mind in a healthy body” is his credo, shared with another great maestro Arthur Rubinstein.

The young Uto studied with George Enescu, Yehudi Menuhin’s teacher. He started his great European tours performing in the main capitals and since then his career hasn’t stopped. He has played all over the world with the most famous symphonic orchestras including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Washington Symphony Orchestra and many others, under the direction of some of the world’s greatest conductors including Sir John Barbirolli, Celibidache, Colin Davis, Fruhbeck de Burgos, Giulini, Leitner, Maazel, Masur, Mehta, Rostropovich, Sargeant, Sawallisch, Sinopoli, Slatkin.

He has recently been appointed President of the Committee for the diffusion of classical music among a younger public.
In 1997 the President of the Italian Republic conferred on him the title of “Cavaliere di Gran Croce” (Knight Grand Cross) for his artistic merits. His awards include the most prestigious “Una vita per la musica – Leonard Bernstein” (1997), “Galileo 2000” prize (2003) and the international prize “Ostia Mare” (2003).

For the Singapore concert, Uto Ughi plays a “Guarneri del Gesù” of 1744 (violin), that is characterised by a deep warm sound – probably one of the best “Guarneris” in existence. He will be accompanied by his long-time musical collaborator pianist Bruno Canino.
