The Weekly Grub: 5 Things to Eat & Drink This Week

This week, we see a couple of new menus hitting the scene, a tribute to unagi, and some Japanese made snacks that happen to be readily available. Best part? A new happy hour in the city awaits.

Mikuni brings the ancient Japanese tradition of consuming eel (which is said to increase stamina and boost vitality for the rest of the year) during the summer months to Singapore. Given that every month in Singapore feels like summer, this definitely seems like a tradition we should adopt. Their exquisite six-course Mikuni Eel Summer Lunch ($138++) features an array of  eel-based delicacies. For more information, see our review here.

The “Doyo No Ushi No Hi” Mikuni Eel Special Summer Lunch is available till 6 August 2016, 12pm to 2.30pm daily. Mikuni is located at 80 Bras Basah Road, Level 3 Fairmont Hotel, Singapore 189560, p. 6431 6156. Email [email protected] for reservations.

House at Dempsey’s Refreshed Menu
HouseDempseyInterior

The new menu at house features bigger and bolder flavours, with some East-meets-West concepts thrown into the mix for good measure. Bacon & Egg in a Naan Jam ($22) sees caramelized bacon, a golden sunny-side egg, spicy tomato jam, and cream cheese all in a grilled naan roll – yum! Vegetarians, try their sweet-salty combo of a pasta, the Baked Pumpkin & Goat’s Cheese Rigatoni or the Portobello Schnitzel Bun ($28), with a patty made of breaded Portobello and Provolone cheese.

House is located at 8D Dempsey Rd, Singapore 249672, p. 64757787. Open Mon-Thu 12pm – 11pm (last order 10pm), Fri 12pm – 12am (last order 10.30pm), Sat 11am – 12am (last order 10.30pm), Sun 9am – 11pm (last order 10pm).

 7-Eleven’s Japanese-Made Snacks
7-select 7-11 Japanese-made snacks

A new line of snacks has hit the 7-Eleven convenience stores under a new brand, 7-Select. Ranging from $2.50 to $3.50, each of the 12 snacks available are made from authentic Japanese ingredients. Our personal favourites are the 7-Select Langue De Chat “cat’s tongue” biscuits ($3.30) and Tamago Boro ($2.80). Both have that delightful melt-in-your-mouth quality. The former has a layer of chocolate (available in white or milk) that goes well with the thin and light biscuit, while the latter is enjoyable for the childhood nostalgic value alone. Honourable mention goes to the Kodawari Peanuts with Crackers ($2.80); who knew a simple mix of peanuts and crackers could be so addictive?

The snacks are available in 375 7-Eleven stores across the island.
