Your quick easy guide to art happenings in Singapore this weekend – and there’s ALOT!

Having that…what to do this weekend… feeling? Well, there’s an awful lot of creativity showing in Singapore this weekend, so we thought we’d wrap it all up in a neat little bow and tell you what’s occurring!

Gillman Barracks

To celebrate its first anniversary, Gillman Barracks will be extending opening hours till 9pm every Friday for the month of September. In conjunction with the celebrations, there will also be various exhibition openings, art walks and artist talks.

Curated by Tang Ling Nah, A Thing or Two about the Bed showcases 9 artworks by artists including Lucy Davis, Tay Bak Chiang and Andrée Weschler, to explore the bed in its different perspectives and meanings, both literal and figurative.

The mixed media works examine the bed with respect to concerns such as the tangible and the intangible, human relationships and emotions, rest and action; life and death, realities and memories. The exhibition goes beyond looking at the bed as a place for rest and intimacy. In short, bed matters.

Artist talks and a performance will also be held in conjunction with the exhibition.

The Fost Gallery is located at #01-02, Gillman Barracks, 1 Lock Rd, Singapore 108932. For more information see their website here.

Persistence of Vision

Space Cottonseed

This solo exhibition by Urich Lau will feature video works, experimental photography and prints inspired by fundamental concepts in moving and still images, action and interactivity, electronic technicality and filmic aesthetics. Using appropriation as a main mode of operation, the artist reformulates segments of well-known black-and-white films as conceptual, narrative and formalistic pieces that reflect on issues in contemporary art.

Space Cottonseed is located at 47 Malan Road #01-24, Singapore 109444. For more information see the event page here

Goodman Arts Centre Open House

7-8 September

10am–6pm

Make your own ceramic mug. Try your hand at drawing and batik painting, book making or paper flower making. Watch dance performances by T.H.E Dance Company, or close your eyes to the melodious heralding by the Philharmonic Brass Quintet. Do some yoga after a contemporary dance workshop. Banter with artists such as Robert Zhao and Wong Lip Chin about the state of visual arts today. Enter the artists’ studios and explore their worlds as they open their doors to you. Round it all off with a stellar Italian meal at La Barca or all-day breakfast at Café Melba – or a typical Singaporean feast at the Old Airport Hawker Centre just a quick walk away.

The third year of Goodman Arts Centre’s Open House will have 150 programmes across multi-disciplinary genres by over 200 artists and arts groups, including workshops, talks and performances. The activities are for everyone from individuals, friends, couples, families and – we know you’ll love this – absolutely free! Free parking will be made available just for these two days too.

Best to put aside a whole day for this.
