10 Things to Do in Bali This Month: June 2018

As summer hits the Northern hemisphere, June sees the migration of musical festivals, shows, and parties from other parts of the world to Bali, so island dwellers and holiday makers can look forward to international DJs jetting into town. Closer to home, the annual Bali Arts Festival returns for its 40th edition for a month-long celebration of the island’s vibrant arts scene.
Bali Arts Festival
Bali’s cultural scene is going to spark up the month of June with the 40th annual Bali Arts Festival, where daily art exhibitions, performances and artsy activities are going to happen for one whole month, taking place at Taman Werdhi Budaya Arts Centre. Expect traditional bamboo and coconut decorations all over town and many outdoor stages and pavilions ready for classic dances, puppetry, photography exhibitions and musical performances to take place. The festival will start with a parade in front of the Bajra Sadhi monument in Denpasar and end with a ceremony featuring a traditional ballet dance widely known as ‘sendratari’ happening at the Ardha Candra stage.

The Den Launch Party
Catch the launch party of ‘the bar within a bar’ that is The Den. Tucked at the back of Sea Vu Play, The Den is the newly rising bar opening only on Fridays and Saturdays, and it’s all about quality drinks and quality music with Bali’s finest DJs and natives on rotation. Their launch party will feature Kusasi (Bali) and one of Singapore’s finest Darker Than Wax on the decks.

Deus 9ft & Single Fest 18’
Attention surfers and beach babes! Here comes the eighth year of Deus 9 Foot & Single, a four-day surf, film, and music. The series of events start on Thursday with the Bali Fish Fry wave board surf contest taking place in Pererenan Beach, followed by weekend activities such as the Single Log and The Ladies Log surf events, a film festival at The Backyard Cinema, a music concert featuring Australian indie band Lime Cordiale, as well as art exhibition entitled ‘Keep Out of Direct Sunlight’ by Marcus Dixon and Brendan Davies at Deus Canggu. Stick around for the Wrap Up party on Sunday!

Sun & Moon; a day-night party with Above & Beyond at OMNIA
Following their latest release of their album, ‘We Are All We Need‘, the British trio Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki, also known as Above & Beyond, will be taking over OMNIA’s deck with their Friday day and night party. Look forward to their exceptionally and emotionally uplifting electronic tunes from sunset until moonrise over the uninterrupted breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean back drop.

Late Night Session: Nakadia at Woobar
This upcoming edition of Late Night Session at Woobar will star Nakadia, the independently rising female electronic Thai DJ who has been crafting her music and developing her musical style. Her musical journey took her from the fellow island paradise of Koh Samui, where she dived into the electronic music scene, to multiple gigs at great venues such as Watergate in Berlin, The Egg in London, and Bangkok’s Glow.

Two Documentaries Films by Jason Moon
Ubud filmmaker Jason Moon will be screening two of his award-winning documentaries at Yoga Barn’s Monday Movie Night. Troppoc tells a personal story of a documentary maker Kim Webby on her journey to remote Sumatran islands as she volunteers to help doctor Derek Allen from New Zealand, the only medical lifeline of 60,000 islanders. Coming Home is an autobiographical documentary on Jason Moon’s journey back to his ancestral village in China. Come early to enjoy a delicious vegan dinner at 6pm and pre-movie banter.

Dobro: Bali Edition
Expect a night full of techno-house spins presented by TECH WARRIORS and GEM taking place in Bali’s hottest techno club Red Ruby. One of India’s hottest party events, Dobro is making a debut in the islands of the Gods with a banging collaborative lineup between Goa and Bali, featuring 4 DJs – G MONK, CHILL, MANUL, and MOSCADA – who will be taking over both indoor and the terrace dancefloor!

Danny Tenaglia & Skream
Another debut show will be hitting Potato Head Beach Club this June. The legendary Danny Tenaglia (NY) will be dropping some serious late 70’s to 90’s inspired high-profile remixes, while British DJ and producer Skream (a.k.a Oliver Dene Jones) will be taking you on a venture into his house, techno and disco tunes. If you plan to start early, join the sundown session with the opening act by Archie and Seabass.

Uma Sai
Join the celebration of Uma Sai, a movement, a moveable feast, a mothership created through breath, dance, love and presence on its first edition featuring performances by Minük (Sweden), Raio / Pachamantra (Bali) as well as Uma Sai’s resident DJs Laws on Earth, Kirain, Sylvie Forêt and Walker. It will be a spiritual journey paired with epic tribal beats and live electronic medicine music, with Carlos kicking off the event with yin yang yoga and sound bath.

The Drop Festival Sideshow at Ulu Cliffhouse
Wrapping up their three shows across three states with a party in Bali sure makes it clear that The Drop Festival is not one to end their festivities with just a mediocre finish! As if hitting the shores of D’Bah, Torquay and Margaret River last in March and April wasn’t enough of a ride, this Australian surf-music-art festival will be crossing international waters to have their closing party at Ulu Cliffhouse, featuring Dune Rats, DZ Deathrays, Kaiser Waldon, Paul T and Dr. Willis on their lineup.
