Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Perhaps more fondly known to locals as the “durian buildings”, the Esplanade has rapidly become one of Singapore’s leading performing arts centres since its inception in 2002. Now one of the world’s busiest arts hubs, the Esplanade hosts an average of 14 festivals and 20 different on-going programmes throughout the year – keeping true to their visions of ensuring accessibility to the arts and encouraging collaboration across various local arts groups.

Despite being known to be home to many internationally renowned acts and performances (imagine our delight in being able to catch Avenue Q back in 2012 within the comfort of our own halls!), the Esplanade also plays host to a multitude of homegrown acts, with their recital and theatre studios commonly being used for local productions.

What many people don’t seem to know is (and you didn’t hear it from us!), is that the Esplanade is also home to SIngapore’s first performing arts library – library@esplanade. With over 50,000 volumes of performing arts material, it’s no surprise that the space is popular with so many of Singapore’s budding artists.

With a myriad of performing arts events held each month (we’re looking forward to May’s screening of King Lear!) and even an underground tunnel that plays host to various pieces of installation art, the Esplanade has definitely proven itself to be a wonderful destination to immerse oneself in the arts.

When Joel’s not partaking in one of his shameless eating sessions, he likes to think of himself as a sponge – absorbing the mysteries and beauty of our world – be it through a good book or a wacky jaunt in a foreign country.
