EYE CANDY: We Chat with Singaporean Artist, Juls
PUBLISHED April 22nd, 2016 06:54 pm | UPDATED July 22nd, 2024 02:45 pm
Juls began her life in art in 2000, when she majored in photography, then stumbled into graphic design, had her foot briefly in advertising, and soon found drawing as her main focus as a practicing artist.
She has been nominated and won various awards between 2003 and 2013, and was selected to be one of the artists at The Swatch Art Peace Hotel residency where she spent 6 months developing her practice in various drawing experimentations. Juls recently participated in the “Swatch Loves Art” exhibition in Hong Kong with 18 local and international artists.
For this edition of EYE CANDY, we sat this talented artist down and asked about her inspiration, art and latest happenings.
Hi Juls, you were based overseas for a long time and now residing back in Singapore at the moment. What have you been up to?
Things have been picking up. This year started really nicely with mural projects for Facebook SG and Gallery & Co; did a studio residency with Grey Projects for 8 weeks; had a Swatch watch launch; will be collaborating with Sundays SG and right now working closely with Tina Fung who is a Set Designer and picking up some new skills!
How would you describe your art?
My main focus is exploring the subtlety of drawing by the act of mark making. Exploring the alteration in narratives of these lines when a different methodology is applied. I am in the process of discovering how I can translate a mark through different mediums and having multiple representations to convey those unspoken thoughts. I intend to make abstraction deliberate and is looking for a harmony, and the melody in these written vibrations and formations. My works intend to promulgate the multiplicity of abstract conception as I crave for the beauty of ambiguity and awe of decipherment.
What inspires you?
I am learning to find inspiration in everything and it’s all a learning process. I am inspired by the novels I read and the music I listen to. But I find myself most inspired when I am travelling on my own on adventures and meeting strange characters.
Would you consider having your drawings printed on apparel? We would buy them!
In fact, I had a drawing project previously where I printed my patterns on fabric and had some outfits tailored! Right now, I have some pieces on Print All Over Me. I love the concept of this label as it is print-on-demand.
What do you do on your free time?
I go for a swim… I read… I hang out with the friends… I go to parties…I dream…
So what’s the next step for you?
At the moment, I will continue the work I have with Tina (the Set Designer) and at the same time look out for Art Residencies that I can apply to. I am hoping to be able to “doodle” on more walls! I reckon, I will continue to follow the flow and let the wind take me to places…
