Adapting to Thai food was effortless for me. A perfected combination of centuries-old recipes and international influences, it is widely renowned as one of the world’s most unique cuisines. Having lived in Bangkok for almost two years now, I am lucky to have access to the very best of what Thai cuisine has to offer. From street food vendors to 5 star banquets, I can’t imagine I’ll ever tire of Thai gastronomy. One of my favourite Thai food establishments is North-East; a Silom restaurant that specialises in North-Eastern Thai food (also known as Isaan).
Located just 200 metres from Silom MRT, North-East dishes up exceptionally good Thai food from its expansive menu. Traditional Thai beers such as Leo and Singha are on hand to get you started as well as some freshly squeezed juices and shakes. North-East boasts a wide range of nibbles and the Deep-Fried Dried Pork (100 bt) is always a regular at my table along with some Stir-Fried Mixed Vegetables (85 bt) and Stir-Fried Chicken with Cashew Nuts and Dried Chilli (135 bt).
When I’m lucky enough to have visitors from abroad, North-East is always my means of introducing them to Thai food. On top of places the dishes I’ve mentioned, I tend to order the Pad Thai (75 bt) and Tom Yum Goong (145 bt), two of Thailand’s most traditional dishes. After two years of experimenting and copious amounts of food, they still remain high on my list of favourites.
A special mention needs to go to North-East’s Stir-Fried Sliced Dolly with Sweet and Sour Sauce (135 bt). Many an evening has been spent trekking across the city for this dish alone and I’ve yet to regret the journey. It’s my kryptonite!
The best of Thai cuisine in one of the city’s most bustling locations; 5 stars for North-East every single time.
