You probably know by now that we are huge fans of MAAD- Market of Artists And Designers, but there is only so many times we can say awesome, awesome, awesome, you must go, WE LOVE MAAD! yadda yadda, you know? So we thought, what can we do to get you, our Nomad posse into a MAAD state of mind?
For those of you that don’t know… MAAD is the Market of Artists And Designers. It is a monthly Friday night celebration of local creativity and imagination at the red dot design museum. It is jam-packed with original artwork, design and craft, from some vendors who have just started and other who are established distributors, stocked in shops and so on. It’s a melting pot of creativity, with live artwork happening, sometimes even live grooming, courtesy of renegade hair maestro’s Heist. All set to the soundtrack of live performances by local bands and DJs.
We decided that the best way to pique your curiosity is to shine a light on particular goodies that you can only find at MAAD. So starting this month, and every month, we’ll pick something awesome, show you, wave it in your face a bit and then you’ll be all like…. ‘dude, I HAVE to go to MAAD’ and our work is done!
This month, we are loving Kang. He likes making ‘new stuff from old stuff’, working with reclaimed, upcycled and unconventional materials and turning then into a thing of quite cutting edge, fashionable beauty. Jewellery would be a loose description, but his pieces are quite abstract and sculptural and would not be out of place in some sort of Fifth-Element-esque world.
“Crafting is my true passion and I value craftsmanship a lot. I take pride in creating beautiful and well-made things. Well, as best as my hands can manage, at least. I believe in crafting by hand. The end product will always be unique and special. That is why I particularly enjoy working with unconventional/reclaimed materials too. There is a sense of accomplishment when it comes to the creative manipulation of a material; to take something ordinary and make it extraordinary; to breathe new life into old stuff.”
Kang’s designs are not only inventive and innovative, but finished extremely well- there’s nothing ‘handmade’ about them. Here’s a few pieces that stood out for us.
So to sum up, check out the product of a wonderful inventive mind and then benefit hugely when friends say “wow, awesome bracelet!”… “Yup, just a little something I picked up at MAAD!”
