PUBLISHED July 10th, 2015 01:52 am | UPDATED May 18th, 2020 04:47 pm
Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen might have received the most hype, but it isn’t the only new restaurant in town. Other places deserving of your attention include a bespoke wonton mee bar hitting Amoy Street, Singapore’s first tendon (tempura rice bowl) restaurant, and master baker Dean Brettschneider’s latest venture at East Coast Road. Check ’em out:
Bread Street Kitchen
A collaboration between outspoken celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and Marina Bay Sands, Bread Street Kitchen is the Scotsman’s first foray into Singapore’s dining scene. Instead of diving into the deep end with a brand new concept, the culinary icon plays it safe by incorporating a traditional British/European menu that focuses on fresh, seasonal produce and wholesome, hearty dishes. Think classics like Fish and Chips, Irish Angus Rib-eye Steak, and Macaroni Cheese with Garlic Roasted Crumbs.
Bread Street Kitchen is located at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands #01-81, 2 Bayfront Avenue, 018972. Tel: +65 6688 5665
WANTON Seng’s Noodle Bar
Remodelling a well-loved local dish isn’t easy, but these lads do it with aplomb. By deconstructing a classic bowl of wonton noodles, customers are able to ‘create’ their own dishes, with signature Seng’s noodles ($2) as the base, and premium ingredients such as a Slow Braised Pig Trotters ($16) and Fried Wontons ($8) as side dishes. It might seem a little pricey, but the food quality is undeniably first-rate, while portions can be sufficiently shared between two people.
WANTON Seng’s Noodle Bar is located at 52 Amoy Street, 069878. Tel: +65 6221 1336
Luxe Singapore
The latest dining concept to open at The Working Capitol, Luxe Singapore is the Australian Luxe group’s first overseas outlet. Yuppies and hipsters will adore the clean, minimalist decor, and the sizeable space is a refreshing change from cluttered cafés in Singapore. Foodies, their small menu yields gems like Cauliflower with Sunflower Seeds and Dijon Dressing ($16), Grilled Barramundi with Rojak Flower Butter Sauce ($36), and Pandan Madeleines ($8). See our full review here.
Luxe Singapore is located at 1 Keong Saik Road #01-04, 089109. Tel: +65 6221 5615
MACA
Away from the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road lies a sleek new restaurant with a penchant for inventive cooking. Helmed by Sri-Lankan born chef Rishi Naleendra, expect imaginative interpretations of modern European cuisine with Asian influences at this minimalist, industrial-chic restaurant. We particularly enjoyed the Chargrilled Baby Octopus ($22) that’s elevated by the accompanying smoked miso dip and the flavoursome onion consummé paired with the Baby Globe Artichoke ($17).
MACA is located at 56 Tanglin Road, #B1-01, 247964. Tel: +65 6463 8080
Bottura
Eat and drink authentic, and affordable, Italian food at this expansive 144-seater restaurant in Suntec City. Owner Luca Bottura is the 5th generation of a family in the food and beverage industry in Italy, so he definitely knows what he’s doing. The delights of Bologna are their specialty and there are more than a few family recipes on the menu. We recommend going for rich-in-flavour pastas like the Egg and Squid Ink Tagliolini ($16) with shrimp and zucchini, Four Cheese Gnocchi ($14) with rocket pesto, and the Tagliatelle with Traditional Ragù ($15). Do also check out their retail space for things like wines, dried porcini mushrooms, and balsamic vinegar – all imported from Italy.
Bottura is located at Suntec City Mall Tower 1 #02-472/473/474, 038983. Tel: +65 6238 7527
Tendon Ginza Itsuki
Spizza Mercato
Spizza has long cemented a reputation for being an affordable Italian restaurant, and it’s latest branch at Capitol Piazza is no different. Ideal for a quick-fix of Italian comfort food, Spizza Mercato has a largely unimaginative, but solid list of antipasti, pizzas, and pastas. If you like what you see, check out their grocer’s section, where artisanal products such as gourmet ingredients, Italian wines, and kitchenware are available for purchase if you so fancy.
Spizza Mercato is located at 13 Stamford Road B2-52 Capitol Piazza, 178905. Tel: +65 6702 1835
Capri Trattoria & Pizzeria
Although this Binjai Park gem has been open for awhile, we stumbled upon it when the menu underwent a revamp recently. Diners can look forward to monthly regional specials, such as cuisine from Calabria in Southern Italy. The Home-made Pasta with Ndjua ($25) is an eye-opener, and the spicy, spreadable pork paste is absolutely delish. Alternatively, try the delectable Pizza allo Spada ($28) – pizza topped with carpaccio of house-cured swordfish – and the traditional seafood stew, Cacciucco alla Livornese ($28). Even if you don’t live in the vicinity, Capri makes a trip out to Bukit Timah worthwhile.
Capri Trattoria & Pizzeria is located at 3 Binjai Park, Bukit Timah, 589819. Tel: +65 6468 4886
Braseiro
Braseiro is the latest addition to Joo Chiat Road’s awesome cluster of dining options. Unpretentious and homey, this humble establishment offers customers a tantalising array of meaty treats, from succulent Beef Steak to tender roasted Chicken. Best of all, you can get stuffed with their wallet-friendly promotion of free-flow fries and salads for the price of $19.90.
Braseiro is located at 333 Joo Chiat Road, 427588. Tel: +65 9119 1158
Plank Sourdough Pizza
After the roaring success of Baker & Cook, bread expert Dean Brettschneider is at it again with Plank Sourdough Pizza – an establishment that promises to shake up Singapore’s pizza world. Making use of sourdough bread as a base, this bakery mogul delivers a brand of pizza that has superbly delectable crust. Add delicious toppings and sinful desserts to the mix, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for success.
Plank Sourdough Pizza is located at 1 Swan Lake Ave, 455700. Tel: +65 6448 9288
