Just Opened May 2015: 10 New Restaurants and Bars to Check Out

The food and beverage industry in Singapore constantly comes up with new surprises. From gin bars to Chinese tapas, and back-to-basics Japanese cuisine, here’s our chosen bunch of the new kids on the block this month.
Copper
Another hidden bar in the Keong Saik neighbourhood (no signage save the chemical symbol of copper above the door), Copper’s futuristic and eccentric decor is certainly an eye-opener. As you’d expect of a gin bar, they have a wide selection of gin brands as well as home infused gins. We also love the Negronis they have on tap! Feeling peckish? Try their succulent Lamb Kaftas ($18) and juicy Copper Meatballs ($16). Unfortunately, the Duck & Waffle ($20) served with duck jus and bacon infused maple syrup is available only during supper. Their omakase-styled restaurant lies in wait on the second floor with 5 and 8 course degustation menus, $128++ and $178++, respectively.
Copper is located at 10 Jiak Chuan Road, Singapore 089264. Open Mon-Wed 6pm-12am, Thu-Sat 6pm-3am. Closed Sundays.
PerBacco Enoteca con Cucina
The latest in Singapore’s long line of Italian joints, PerBacco Enoteca con Cucina offers casual dining in a chic, industrial layout. The affordable prices are a major plus point, with wines starting at $9 a glass, and $42 a bottle, while set lunches begin at $28. Small servings of typical Italian meats like Parma Ham and Salami will complement a glass of wine or two, but the ravenous will take pleasure in mains like Roasted Black Cod, a Pork Ragout Pasta, and a Claypot Fregola with fresh Lobster.
PerBacco Enoteca con Cucina is located at #01-03 Craig Road, 20 Craig Road, Singapore 089692. Open Mon-Fri 12pm-2.30pm, 6-10.30pm and Sat 6-10.30pm. Closed Sundays.
McGettigan’s
Good news for fans of Fish & Chips and Guinness – there’s a new Irish pub in town! Following the success of McGettigan’s in Dubai, Dubliner Dennis McGettigan decided to bring his Irish tavern to Singapore. As opposed to many Irish pubs that are rather drab, McGettigan’s possesses swanky interiors with the same comforting pub grub, tap offerings of traditional Irish brews, and convivial atmosphere.
McGettigan’s is located at #01-01 3A River Valley Road, Singapore 179020. Open Mon-Fri 12pm-3am, Sat-Sun 10am-3am.
Sum Yi Tai
The glitzy name (which means “Third Wife” in Cantonese) is a tribute to the debauchery of 1980s Hong Kong, and aptly, this concept bar serves traditional Chinese fare along with glamorous cocktails. Tuck into tapas-style renditions of dishes you know and love like Crispy Roast Pork, Ma Po Tofu, and Crispy Salmon Skin. Not to mention, the invite-only rooftop bar gives this place a certain allure and exclusivity.
Sum Yi Tai is located at 25 Boon Tat Street, Singapore 069622. Open Mon-Fri 11.30am-2.30pm, 5pm-1am, and Sat 5pm-1am. Closed Sundays.
Kacang Putih
Fed up of overly neat and tidy drinking establishments? Well then, it looks like Kacang Putih could be just the place for you. Serving up cocktails in a dingy, dodgy environment, this new bar at Boat Quay is in-your-face, funny and best of all, unpretentious. Also, get a load of Singapore’s favourite street food snack, Kacang Puteh – where peanuts of all sorts are wrapped in August Man pages. Yup, these lads claim the paper makes the nuts atas (classy).
Kacang Putih is located at 61 Boat Quay, Singapore 049849. Open Tue-Sun 6pm-3am. Closed Mondays.
Kanda Wadatsumi
If you’re looking for authentic Japanese cuisine, new boy Kanda Wadatsumi gives the fusion cuisine – commonly seen in Japanese restaurants – a wide berth and heads back to basics. Inspired by a popular Japanese restaurant in Kanda, a district of Tokyo, Chef Shinji Hara reintroduces you to the wonders of bona fide Japanese fare.
Kanda Wadatsumi is located at 50 Tras Street, Singapore 078989. Open Mon-Sat 12pm-3pm, 6pm-11pm. Closed Sundays.
Haha Thai
After previous stints in Changi Village and Lavender, the seafood-based Haha Thai has opened its doors in upmarket Takashimaya. Their dishes come with a local twist, which caters to the Singaporean palate. While prices are steeper than average for mall restaurants, the food here is way better than most Thai chain restaurants.
Haha Thai is located at Ngee Ann City, 391 Orchard Rd, #05-29, Singapore 238873. Open Mon-Sun 11am-10pm.
Shin Gi Tai
Formerly of Jigger and Pony, Anthony Zhong, is leading Shin Gin Tai with aplomb as head bartender and owner. An Australian inspired café by day and Japanese cocktail bar by night, this establishment promises to shake up Singapore’s cocktail scene. Serving solid cocktails and excellent bar bites in a snug environment, we foresee Shin Gin Tai giving fellow cocktail bars a run for their money.
Shin Gi Tai is located at 51 Waterloo Street #01-04, Singapore 187969. Open Mon-Sat 6pm-Midnight.
Draft & Craft
Get ready for Californian lovin’ at Draft and Craft, where you can get all the craft beers you want and authentic SoCal comfort food. Have fun making your very own grilled cheese sandwich, with hearty toppings like bacon, prosciutto, and chorizo. If you’re into Tex-Mex, dig into their selection of tacos – Chicken & Avocado, Carnitas Pork, and Baja Fish.
Draft & Craft is located at 31 Circular Road, Singapore 049387. Mon-Thu 12pm-Midnight, Fri 12pm-1am, Sat 4pm-1am. Closed on Sundays.
Refuge
When Hip Hop is all you’re playing to compete in the mainstream/EDM market in Singapore, we’ve gotta give it to you. Limited Edition Concepts are levelling up their game to bring back the beats to Singapore. And it really isn’t a shocker – after all, they are the brains behind underground club Kyo. For a night of revelry, go crazy with their $5 happy hour drinks from 5pm to 9pm. Also, the cover charge of $12 from 10pm onwards means that you can spend more on drinks.
Refuge is located at 79 Circular Road, #02-01/ #03-01, Singapore 049433. Bar Opening Hours: Tue & Thu: 5pm-1am, Wed & Fri: 5pm – 3am, Sat: 7pm – 4am. Club Opening Hours: Wed & Fri: 10pm – 3am, Sat: 10pm – 4am
