Kimberly Chua’s ‘Tissue To Save Dogs’ Fundraiser Is Saving Mongrels One Trade At A Time

Some of you may have heard the extraordinary story of a man in Canada who traded a paperclip for a house. Perhaps, you have even thought about giving it a go yourself. Well, that’s exactly what fellow Singaporean Kimberly Chua set out to do during this Circuit Breaker. However, instead of scoring a jackpot for herself, she’s in it to lend a helping hand to our furry friends in need at SOSD (Save Our Street Dogs) – a non-profit, volunteer-run organisation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming stray and abandoned dogs.

A marketing manager of a local start-up and loving paw parent to an adorable fur baby of her own, Kim noticed that dog shelters in Singapore were facing declining donations and a manpower crunch as a result of the pandemic. The urgency of the situation coupled with her stroke of genius led to the conception of the innovative fundraiser campaign, Tissue to Save Dogs.

What is Tissue To Save Dogs and How Does It Work?

Tissue to Save Dogs is a simple yet one-of-a-kind campaign (insofar we’ve seen) that raises funds for SOSD through a chain exchange of objects.“During this period, I understand that not everyone may have enough cash on hand to donate, but most will have valuable items to trade.” said Kimberly.

So how does it work? Each item is traded for another of higher value till she obtains one that is valuable enough to be sold. All proceeds from the sale of the final item will go to SOSD Singapore. Hosted on Instagram, the latest item up for trade is shown in the Highlights.

Kicking off from just three packets of tissue, Kimberly’s ongoing campaign has since then progressed onto higher value items like a Bang & Olufsen Beoplay portable Bluetooth speaker, Timbuk2 messenger bags and more. According to Kimberly, “The benefits of this fundraising mechanism are that people don’t need to fork out cash, they can get something in return and, at the same time, contribute to fundraising.”.

Don’t have any items of value that can be traded? Fret not, you can still play your part by purchasing the customized #tissuestosavedogs tissue packets that Kimberly has produced in limited quantities for those unable to participate. A pack of 10 tissues is priced at S$10, and all the proceeds will be donated to the beneficiary.

Alternatively, check out SOSD’s website to find out how you can play your part in helping these rescued strays. Whether you want to adopt a dog, be a dog shelter volunteer or even become a foster parent while these beautiful dogs await their forever homes, there are a myriad of ways to show that you care.
