Fans of one of our favourite steak frites restaurants – L’Entrecote, Duxton Hill – we have some good news for you!
A second outlet, L’Entrecote Express, has opened in the Orchard area, nestled up against sister gourmet burger joint &Made in Pacific Plaza. If you have dined at the original L’Entrecote restaurant, you will be familiar with the concept; the serving of one tasty dish in the form of an entrecote steak, accompanied by a delicious secret sauce, golden frites, a simple walnut salad, all washed down with a glass or two of red wine…if you so desire.
At L’Entrecote Express, things have been made, as the name suggests..a wee more snappy. At Duxton, steak is dished out in two more leisurely servings. To suit the more frenetic pace of Orchard, here it’s served all as one. But don’t worry, what express doesn’t mean (as we found out when we dined there) is a decrease in quality and the only quantity that’s different here is the selection of appetizers and desserts which compliment the main event. Essentially all the best bits of the Duxton restaurant have conveniently been siphoned off and popped on the menu.
Starting with the appetizers, you’ll see favourites like Duck Rilettes ($16) – deliciously tender, succulent duck whipped up into a smooth, creamy and flavourful terrine – the perfect accomplice to the rustic Poilane Bread.
And who can pass up the Escargots de Bourgogne ($18)? Certainly not I. Juicy, perfect in size, great texture and oh that sauce of parsley butter and garlic! Just made for soaking bread in.
You wouldn’t want to fill yourself up too much before steak time. Which by the way is now. One word of warning – people often forget that in a French restaurant, steak is always cooked on the rarer side. So while ordinarily you might opt for medium rare, what you might actually find is more up your street at L’Entrecote Express is in fact something more like medium well. Adjust your expectations accordingly.
At only $29.90 for the Entrecote Steak, fries and walnut green salad, you will be hard pressed to find any steak as tasty and of similar quality for that price in other establishments across Singapore. And that’s why for me, the offering here certainly gets a thumbs up – especially in a dining scene where a steak menu can quite easily start at $80. It makes a refreshing change (and gives your wallet a rest too)!
We only had the tiniest amount of space left on this lunch time tasting left to sample dessert, but we’re certainly glad we did. On the menu, the description for the Lemon Tart ($12) reads “Just Lemon”. And that’s spot on. Because it’s an unfussy sweet ending which needs no further description. A perfect palate cleanser at the end of your whirlwind steak affair, and somehow both wonderfully tart and mellow at the same time.
L’Entrecote Express is the perfect pit stop for a mid-shop refuel or pre/post movie bite to eat and we’re happy to be adding it to our very small but perfectly formed list of go-to places to escape the maddening crowds of Orchard.
