There’s nothing like a couple of hours of mooching at a weekend flea or market – and with the scene pretty much exploding of late, there’s something for everyone whether you’re into fashion, artisan finds, crafty picks, vintage bits and bobs or simply want to fill your face with food. And so without any further ado, here’s our round up Singapore’s best flea markets and other fairs.
MAAD Market of Artists and Designers
Ah the creative market movement – this is where it all started, the market which went beyond the usual fashion-based, second-hand flea market. MAAD takes over the entire red dot design museum, hawking only original, creative, and more often than not, handmade works by talented painters, jewellery makers, product designers, visual artists, wordsmiths and eco-friendly seamstresses. MAAD still does a stellar job of keeping the work of local artists, designers and craft makers alive by providing them with an awesome platform to showcase their wares. Happening monthly, stay tuned to their Facebook page here to find out about the next.
Public Garden
A free spirited market bringing together Singapore’s best independent businesses and creative minds, proving there is more to life than shopping in a mall. Expect to find cool crafty goods, vintage nostalgia and one-of-a-kind pieces, sealed up in a bundle of indie vibe. To find out when the next Public Garden is happening, see their Facebook page here.
Chillax Market
If you’re looking for a market that is a little more, well, upmarket, then Chillax Market might be the one for you. Positioning itself as offering unique, mid to high end quality products such as art works, home decor accessories & furniture, clothing & accessories, as well as gourmet specialty foods, they come with the promise of a chic venue (holding court outside Tanglin Shopping Centre, not the mall), not a flea market. To find out about the next Chillax Market see their Facebook page here.
Fleawhere
These are the guys behind most of the regular markets in Singapore – we’re talking so many, and with a plethora of venues, there are too many to mention here! Largely fashion based, if you’re into a mix of second hand and new items and basically trying your luck, then put on your bargain-sifting hat and head on down. To check out their full offering of fleas, see their website here.
Flea for Good
If you like your market finds to come with the opportunity to do good, then check out Flea for Good where a portion of proceeds made from booth rental goes towards charity with vendors selling everything from craft items, caricatures, clothes and every in-between. Taking place every last weekend of the month at City Square Fountain Square, to find out about the next one see their Facebook page here.
Zouk Flea & Easy
Clear the dance floor because this flea takes up the entire Zouk complex since partnering up with Public Garden. Yup – epic. We’re talking a massive showcase of some of the islands finest designers and artists. Better get your shopping mitts on! Stay tuned to the Zouk Facebook page here for details of the next.
Singapore Really Free Market
Love a freebie? If you do then this is the market for you. The Singapore Really Really Free Market is a market where everything is free. All goods and services are shared free and nothing is for sale. Anyone with stuff or skills to share are welcome to set up a stall, and if you find something you want, you’re welcome to have it. And we can’t say fairer than that! To find out when the next market is happening stay tuned to their Facebook page here.
Pasar Bella
Housed within Turf City, this awesome foodie market is a veritable multi-sensory market experience. Your eyes will pop and your mouth salivate at the fresh seafood, meat, cheeses, baked goodies, craft beers and wines and much much more that you’ll discover here. Packed with quaint stalls, exotic aromas and festivities it’s more than just a market. It’s a definite experience. Open daily – for more information see their Facebook page here.
The Farmers Market @ Loewen Gardens
If food, rather than fashion, is more up your alley, then the Farmers Market which takes place every other Saturday is held at the Pantry at Loewen Gardens. The main idea behind the Farmers’ Market is to capture a piece of home – the simple pleasure of people chatting about food and being passionate about produce. Find gourmet meats, wines, organic vegetables, cheeses, breads, and homemade baked goods. You can also pop in for cooking demonstrations and a wine talk in The Pantry Cooking School. Find out about the next market at their Facebook page here.
Pop up markets galore!
Yes we just love those fantastic markets that pop their head up once a year, maybe twice if you’re lucky. From The Handmade Movement to Kwerkee everyone’s getting in on the action.
