Kimberly Haley Wang, a 987FM DJ, and Sandra Riley Tang from The Sam Willows are just two of the pledgers in For A Golden Home, a charity campaign to raise both funds and awareness for our elderly who stay alone in one-room flats. The official launch on 3 February kicks off with more than 12 pledged projects, including a 5k Challenge whereby a pledger will donate $5000, if public donations hit $5000 by the end of the week!
Pledged projects will also run throughout the campaign period till 31 March 2015. Through these projects and donations, charity campaign For A Golden Home aims to raise at least
S$25,000, which can fund the restoration of approximately 30 one-room flat units.
Raised funds are 100% channelled to local programme Project HomeWorks, which was conceived by Habitat for Humanity Singapore to improve the living conditions of the elderly living in one-room flats. Volunteers are engaged regularly to restore basic living conditions of
these flats through proper fumigation and clean-ups, repair and paint works, and replacing bedbug-infested furniture.
‘It may surprise Singaporeans to hear that there is so much poverty in their own backyard; that there are more than 35,000 vulnerable elderly living amidst our beautifully landscaped public housing estates. There is much need on the ground, more than many know,’ said Ms Melodie Lee, Resource Development Manager, Habitat for Humanity Singapore.
During the campaign period, the campaign website will combine collective fundraising with education on a comprehensive online portal. Visitors can donate, view and pledge projects, and access information such as statistics, info-graphics, videos, articles and volunteer experiences. Individuals and organisations can donate directly or support pledged projects such as Sandra Riley Tang’s fundraising yoga day, Kimberly Wang’s personalised cards, and more.
The public is also invited to pledge their own fundraising projects, from organising a charity run to pledging their birthday wishes as donations―completely up to their creativity.
‘We believe that everyone can make a difference in their own way. Pledging their own projects allows them to contribute in a more meaningful way and spread awareness about this great cause,’ said Xiangyun Lim, campaign manager. “Ultimately, we hope this campaign can bring individuals and organisations together to make a sustainable and lasting positive change for the at-risk elderly community, so that more of them can receive the help they need.”
For A Golden Home is supported by Cromly in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Singapore.
