The Weekly Grub: 8 April 2015

On top of an Italian CBD stalwart launching its yummy new menu, there’s also organic Welsh lamb cooked 11 delish ways, cool (Chinese) cocktails, and more free ice cream – this week is going to be a good one for your bellies.

Cocktails at Jiu Zhuang

For cocktails with a twist (more so than usual, we suppose), head down to Dempsey’s hidden gem of a bar on Fridays and Saturdays in April and May for cocktails crafted with Asian spirits. Created by Jeff Ho – previously of Jekyll & Hyde and Bar Stories – the trio of cocktails feature sake, huangjiu (yellow liquor made from a variety of grains), and baijiu (distilled white liquor made from sorghum). Our favourite is the JZ #9 Dream, a concoction of huangjiu, Cointreau, and tonic water that brought out notes of orange and dark chocolate. All cocktails on the menu are priced at $23++ but Jeff will be doing bespoke cocktails if you fancy something else!

After multiple changes in management, chef, and menu, Zafferano is getting their head solidly in the game with Chef Marco Guccio, whose resume reads like a ‘Best Italian Restaurants in Singapore’ list (Alkaff Mansion, Garibaldi, Otto, and more). Stars of the new menu include the Pan-seared Hokkaido Scallops ($34) with Jerusalem artichoke cream veloute and sautéed chanterelle mushrooms, and the Slow Cooked U.S Prime Beef Short Ribs ($50) with sautéed potatoes and asparagus in veal reduction.

Now, excuse us as we try to decide between Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Phish Food – tough choice.
