World Cinema Series: The Films of Nuri Bilge Ceylan Cocoon / Koza & The Small Town / Kasaba

Cocoon is a haunting visual poem that meditates on the passing of time, the impermanence of human relations, and the inevitability of old age, suffering and death. An elderly couple (played by Ceylan’s parents) reunite after living separately due to a past trauma in their relationship. In the meantime, a little boy transverses through a forest. Shot without dialogue, the film speaks through the impressionism of pure imagery and the naturalistic sounds of the environment, effectively demonstrating Ceylan’s background as a photographer and his intuitive grasp on filmmaking. Cocoon is the first film Ceylan made when he was at the age of thirty-six. It was the first Turkish short film selected for competition at Cannes Film Festival in 1995.
