5 Things to Do this Week: 9-15 February 2015

While you’re preparing for Valentine’s Day and the Lunar New Year, make some time this week for the arts and music ’cause there are some really cool acts coming to town.

P.S, all the single ladies (and men), we have a list of anti Valentine’s Day bashes here if you feel so inclined to make merry with your friends (and maybe finally meet that someone) on 14 February this year.

Portraits of the People

This travelling community engagement program will be providing participants with a tablet to self-sketch their portraits and reflect on what the National Pledge means to them. Many of these self-portraits would be etched onto a permanent commemorative walkway as a tribute to their contribution in building Singapore. And don’t worry if you’ve been failing at art all your life (like I have), the on-site facilitators will guide you through the creative, easy-to-follow process of self-sketching!

Portraits of the People will run 9-15 February 2015, 12pm-8pm, at One Fullerton. For more information, see their website.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Celebrate the spoken word with the Henderson Project this Friday. The night starts with EleMental, a spoken word ensemble performance by performance poets Marc Nair, Charlene Shepherdson, Marylyn Tan, and Allee Koh. Thereafter, catch local music talents like ShiGGa Shay, Benjamin Kheng (of The Sam Willows), and L.A.B with Michaela Therese in the act. Don’t miss headliner Lazy Habit, a seven-piece hip hop group from East London, either.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is taking place on 13 February 2015, 8pm, at Dream Academy, 203 Henderson Road, #02-01, Singapore 159547. For more information and tickets, see website.

New Found Glory

Dubbed the ‘godfathers of modern punk’, the US punk rock band has garnered a cult following since their inception in 1997. Having released 8 studio albums and 2 EPs, fans can expect them to perform songs from their latest album Resurrection and their older hits. Aussie pop punk band Cambridge, whose claim to fame is their first single Catalina Wine Mixer and their cover of T-Swift’s 22, will be opening for New Found Glory.

New Found Glory will be playing on 12 February 2015, 8pm, at The Ground Theatre at SCAPE. For more information and tickets, see website.

Invasion

Featuring deadly fungi, black birds, and a ‘retired’ mascot, Invasion is set in an alternate timeline where an epidemic reaches the shores of Singapore. Infected and trapped in his own body, protagonist Damien Pang is forced to face the ghosts of his past, as do the people around him. At the heart of the play is the desire to reveal the unstable nature of personal identities and the struggle to find footing amidst the constant change. This Friday night is already sold up so do get your tickets, pronto!

Invasion is happening 13-15 February 2015, 8pm daily with an extra matinee at 3pm on Saturday, at Drama Centre Black Box, National Library Building. For more information and tickets, see website.

The Gathering

The folks at Forefront Entertainment are presenting their first multi-artist Gathering at Fort Canning this Saturday. Opening the one-day festival is local soulboy Charlie Lim while Scottish indie pop band Belle and Sebastian will close up with their lithe melodies under the stars. Other acts include Canadian electronica musician Caribou and British psychedelic rock band Temples.

The Gathering is happening 14 February 2015, 12.30pm, at Fort Canning Green. For more information and tickets, see website.
