Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016 might have moved to Bangkok (after three years of holding the ceremony in Singapore) and the Thai capital’s progressive Indian restaurant Gaggan is Asia’s Best for the second consecutive year, the dining gods continue to bless our little island and all of its amazing restaurants.
With 10 establishments in the rankings, Singapore is head to head with Japan, who also see 10 restaurants on the list. While Tokyo institution Narisawa leads the Japanese pack with No.2, Restaurant André remains Singapore’s best restaurant after placing third overall.
Two worthy mentions are Chef Jason Tan’s Corner House with its modern French gastro-botanica and Mod Sin creator Chef Willin Low’s Wild Rocket, as both are making their debut at number 17 and 38 respectively.
The seven other local restaurants that made the cut are:
Waku Ghin – No. 6
Les Amis – No. 12
Burnt Ends – No. 14
Shinji by Kanesaka -No. 21
JAAN – No. 29
Tippling Club – No. 31
Iggy’s – No. 36
Les Amis Group’s Chef Cheryl Koh also clinched the Asia’s Best Pastry Chef award, so if you haven’t tried her tarts (available at Tarte by Cheryl Koh) it’s definitely time to do so. Asia’s Best Female Chef, however, goes to Chef Margarita Forés (of Cibo, Lusso, and Grace Park) in the Philippines.
While the Chefs’ Choice Award went to Paul Pairet, with the avant-garde Ultraviolet (No. 7) and successful Mr. & Mrs. Bund (No. 28) in Shanghai, David Thompson, the man behind Nahm (No. 8) in Bangkok and Long Chim (Singapore, Perth) received The Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award – an accolade well deserved of his status as an international authority on Thai cuisine.
Determined by more than 300 professionals in the F&B industry across Asia, collectively known as The Diners Club Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants is a spin-off of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. The 2016 global rankings are to be announced in New York City in June.
