As young’uns, I’m sure many of us paired a floral top with striped pants (lets just say!) and thought to ourselves, ‘my goodness…my skill and flair for fashion is quite uncanny! Maybe, I should be a fashion designer?!’ or was that just me? Obviously I didn’t fulfil that particular dream so Monsieur Lagerfeld can sleep soundly tonight, but if, like me, you’ve ever dreamt of becoming a top fashion designer, then the works of the 12 finalists from Singapore’s young fashion designer competition Audi Star Creation will be of particular interest, and inspiration.
The 2014 edition of the Audi Star Creation is currently underway, with over 400 aspiring Asian fashion designers submitting designs in the hope of presenting their collections at the annual Audi Fashion Festival in Singapore. For up and coming designers this is a unique and exciting opportunity to present their creations on a significant platform that offers fantastic career opportunities and exposure to fashions movers and shakers.
With the theme this year being ‘The Asian Perspective’ one could say that the competition is wide open for innovation, interpretation and creativity. Well, see for yourself. The 12 finalists have now been chosen and you can see 12 designs from the finalists featured down the left side (they actually submitted approximately 4 each on average so we picked our favourite), but because we are City Nomads, and we champion home grown talent and like to do a big Mexican wave for our up and coming stars..we wanted to show you Singaporean style! And so here are our favourite designs from Angeline Oei, Chloe Keh and Leong Yaowen.

Audi Star Creation judge David Wang, Vice-president of the Textile & Fashion Federation Singapore, spoke of being impressed by the designers so far…’The quality of entries has also increased significantly, showing conceptual depth with powerful storytelling . The designs we have seen have successfully translated the rich heritage we have in Asia into subtle, modern, fashion-forward designs that will appeal to the international market.’
The winning designers’ collections will be shown on the runway during Audi Fashion Festival 2015 and exhibited at the Blueprint Tradeshow at the same year, which gives them one year to design, create and craft their first official foray into the fashion world. What this also means is you can expect to see last years winning collections from Vu Ta Linh (Vietnam) and Sun Yi Jin (China) strutting down the catwalk at this years event. A quick look over Audi Star Creation’s Facebook here shows success story after success story of past finalists doing extraordinary things in their chosen career, so all we can say is good luck, and may the best fashion designer win!
The Audi Star Creation 2014 finalists’ runway show will be held as part of Audi Fashion Festival at The Tent @ Orchard Road on May 12, 2014. You can find more details about the Audi Star Creation 2014 finalists here and follow the event on Facebook here.
