There may be plenty of beef-centric restaurants around Singapore, but which of them has the best steak frites? A beloved French cuisine classic, the deceivingly simple dish of steak and fries is a mainstay across nearly all bistros and brasseries in Paris, though it’s much harder to find a good one here. When it comes to the tastiest and flavourful steak frites in Singapore, these are the winners.
Cocotte
Gorgeous rustic French decor aside, Unlisted Collection’s Cocotte serves up incredibly tasty steak frites at a great price. Chef Anthony Yeoh serves up both the Onglet ($36) and the ribeye Ribeye ($48) grass-fed Cape Grim MBS 2+ with green peppercorn sauce – soft, tender, and slightly smoky without much marbling. With that comes an indulgent basket of sinfully-delicious duck fat fries and a simple salad.
Cocotte is located at 2 Dickson Road, Singapore 209494, p. 6298 1188. Open Mon 11.30am – 2.30pm, 6.30pm – 10.30pm, Wed-Thu 11.30am – 2.30pm, 6.30pm – 10pm, Fri 11.30am – 2.30pm, 6pm – 11pm, Sat-Sun 11am – 3pm, 6pm – 11pm.
L’Entrecote
There is only one cut of steak on the menu at L’Entrecote – the eponymous entrecote, cut from between the cow’s ribs. At $32.90, start with a fresh green walnut salad with mustard dressing before digging into the season’s best steak, paired with free-flow crispy golden fries and a generous helping of the their secret sauce. The beef is separated into two servings, so expect to get your meat hot and juicy each time. Find an excellent wine list on hand at the Duxton Hill outlet.
L’Entrecôte is located at 36 Duxton Hill (L’Entrecôte Bistro), Suntec City #B1-128 (L’Entrecôte Brasserie), and 31 Ocean Way #01-03 (L’Entrecôte Express). Read our full review here.
Les Bouchons
For what Les Bouchons may lack in size, it more than makes in its flavourful steaks – particularly the Grilled Rib Eye Steak With “Vigneron” Butter ($39.80), served with salad and free-flow twice-cooked duck fat fries. The rib eye comes evenly cooked to your desired doneness (medium rare for us), juicy, and very well-seasoned. Together with the fragrant vigneron herb butter, this is a great hit for steak lovers.
Les Bouchons is located at 7 Ann Siang Road, Singapore 069689, p. 6423 0737. Open Mon-Fri 12pm – 2pm, 7pm – 10.30pm, Sat 7pm – 10.30pm.
Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chophouse
Though available only during lunch, Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chophouse (yes, they have the best stuff from both land and sea) serves a fantastic Steak and Fries ($38) with mustard cognac jus and peppercorn crust, something different from the standard charred tops. The meat is without much fat, but is still lean and really tender. Note that you won’t be able to order this cooked more than rare or saignant.
Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chophouse is located at 22 Gemmill Lane, Singapore 069256, p. 6221 4468. Open Mon-Sat 12pm – 11.30pm.
Bedrock Bar & Grill
Part of Bedrock’s 3-Course Set Lunch, the Woodfire-Grilled NY Steak ($58) features a generous cut of strip steak grilled with mesquite wood, resulting in a chewy, beefy and juicy delight. Served with thick cut fries and classic béarnaise sauce, this is a match made in heaven, only better when paired with Bedrock’s range of fine whiskies.
Bedrock Bar & Grill is located at Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Orchard #01-05, 96 Somerset Road, Singapore 238163, p. 6238 0054. Open Mon-Sun 12pm – 3pm, 6pm – 11pm.
