#BettrWeek: Coffee with a conscience

Seems most of us these days are rather into our coffee. Well hear this coffee lovers! Now there’s a way of sipping on our favourite cup of java and giving back. Cue #BettrWeek.

You may have heard #BettrWeek being mentioned here and there, wondering what on earth it’s all about; perhaps you may have already been sent an invite for one of their events by someone in the know; or perhaps you haven’t got the faintest clue what I’m talking about.

Those still in the dark, come a little closer into the light while I explain.

BettrWeek is the brainchild of year-old social enterprise Better Barista Coffee Academy, which uses coffee to help disadvantaged women (yes coffee!) through world-class professional barista training, emotional management an physical training skills. Well I never! And there we all were thinking that coffee was something to kick start our brains in the morning.

Through #BettrWeek, these clever and socially minded beans (pun intended) hope to encourage more people to take time off to a) discover and enjoy speciality coffee (ok so we don’t need convincing there, right?) and b) give a little back along the way while indulging in some liquid gold.

But how so?

Here’s just a little peek at some of the things happening throughout #BettrWeek taking place during 15-18 September….

Singapore’s First Speciality Coffee Crawl

Throughout the duration, for a small registration fee of $25, you’ll be able to make your way between some groovy coffee joints – including 40 Hands, The Broers Café, Jimmy Monkey Café and Bar, Liberty Coffee and Smitten – and sip a free cup of the recommended brew at each of the partner cafes. Only open to 200 participants (so get registering!) you’ll also get a nifty pocket guide with a comprehensive listing of Singapore’s speciality cafes to feed your java obsession.

#BettrWeek Opening Party

On 15 September, our favourite folks at the Pigeonhole will be hosting a free #BettrWeek Opening Party from 8pm, where coffee lovers can be amongst the first to try the rather awesome sounding The Bold and The Brewitful (a liquer based coffee drink) against the backdrop of open ipod sessions.

Bettr Barista Coffee Academy Open House

On 16 September, the social enterprise will open its doors from 10am to 6pm for coffee crawl participants to sample its signature Heart Blend, brewed by baristas who have graduated from the Academy.

Buy a Meal, Give a Meal Dinner

On 18th September, 6.30pm, dine with other good hearted folk at  Food for Thought, Botanical Gardens where every meal you purchase buys a meal for one of #BettrWeek’s beneficiaries – Beyond Social and the Mother and Child Project.

Latte Art Throwdown

On 18th September, 6.30pm, at Food for Thought, Botanical Garden, for $5 amateurs and professionals are can pit their skills against each other in this friendly competition for one big latte art-off.

Proceeds from #BettrWeek activities will contribute towards the 12 week training programme for underprivileged women, which will also see them interning at the above mentioned partner cafes, as well as #BettrWeek’s beneficiaries – Beyond Social and the Mother and Child Project.
