Nature and Spirit: An Artist Talk with Gab Mejia
Sat 5 Apr 2025, 2.30pm – 3.30pm | Objectifs Workshop Space (Register: https://nature-and-spirit.peatix.com/)
Revered as healers, warriors, and teachers, the Baylans of the Talaandig-Manobo have long been guardians of the sacred forests of Mount Kaluntungan in the southern Philippine province of Bukidnon, threatened by an encroaching industrial pace since the Spanish and American colonial period. For the Baylans, the forest is a sacred site—a portal, a threshold. Nature and spirit abide in the Talaandig-Manobo narrative.
Gab Mejia pays homage to this verdant landscape and its people by directing our attention to the queer kinship of two central figures: a head spiritual leader Datu Arayan, and a Baylan initiate and youth leader Krystahl Guina. A new generation of Baylans, they are also members of the Kulahi Pangantucan Performing Arts Group—storytellers, performers, protectors of indigenous heritage. Mejia’s dreamlike portraits animate Datu and Krystal’s deep, unspoken spiritual connection with their land, home, and family amidst the quiet domesticity of their daily rhythms.
The Forest Listens, Their Spirits Cry speaks of a desire to pollinate a dream of a future belonging otherwise.

Smoke blankets the room where Emma Ganila has been scooping brine into an assembly line of tin cans. As salt water boils and evaporates in the tins, blocks of white salt form. Emma has been making Tultul, an artisanal salt only found on Guimaras island.
On Iloilo, an island right across Emma’s, Lorlie Noblezada watches her son, John, face strong breaking waves as he collects seawater with a bamboo pole to start the process of making Budbud salt.
Emma and Lorlie are some of the last artisanal saltmakers in the Philippines. Both have been safekeeping traditional saltmaking processes for decades. However, this craft is in fast decline.
Despite a long history of saltmaking, the Philippines, an archipelago with the fifth-longest coastline in the world, has not produced enough salt for its own needs for the past 15 years. The country has some of the rarest salts in the world, including Tultul and Budbud, and it only needs to ultilise six percent of its coastline to be self-sufficient in salt. But local salts are on the brink of extinction due to unsupportive policies, industry neglect, and climate change.
The process of making artisanal salt is time-consuming and laborious, but still, Emma, at 74, spends her day inside the warm and smoky production house to cook blocks of Tultul salt; Lorlie assesses the seasons and checks if the skies are clear to schedule production of Budbud salt. For these matriarchs, this craft, as much as it is a livelihood, is what binds their families’ day-to-day living.
All life depends on salt.

Embarking on her first Asia tour, the magnetic Luna Li returns to Singapore for her first headlining concert here.
A wildly talented songwriter, arranger, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Luna Li’s sonic universe is a perfect amalgamation of her many talents. Through intricate instrumental melodies and multi-layered arrangements, the Korean-Canadian artist weaves together a sonic universe of dreamy, baroque-pop with elements of soft rock, charming a growing legion of fans with her unique brand of cinematic dream pop.
Having first garnered attention online in 2020, she went on to release her debut EP, Duality, featuring the likes of Jay Som, beabadoobee, and Dreamer Isioma. This record generated hits such as Afterglow, Misery Moon and Silver Into Rain, and garnered a Juno Award nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. This rising star went on to open and tour with the likes of Japanese Breakfast, Wolf Alice, and beabadobee.
But set against When a Thought Grows Wings, her debut feels like a stepping stone to her sweet spot. This sophomore album is a snapshot of its creator influx. For the 27-year-old, born Hannah Bussiere Kim, the journey was tumultuous, pivotal and necessary. After splitting with her partner of eight years and leaving her hometown of Toronto for Los Angeles, she found her world opening in new ways.
Weaving her harp-rippled, baroque-pop through with jazz flute and gritty riffs, the album is a testament to Luna Li’s prowess as a charismatic front person, songwriter, arranger and continuously curious multi-instrumentalist. Making her debut at Esplanade for her first headline show in Singapore, Luna Li is set to sweep audiences off their feet with her undeniable stage presence and unique sonic palette.

Vibrant, shimmery and irresistibly groovy, YĪN YĪN’s cinematic sound has propelled this largely instrumental four-piece band into unexpected global heights.
Hailing from Holland’s southernmost city of Maastricht, the band first caught the attention of listeners globally by meticulously crafting a unique sound that married psychedelia, funk, disco with Asian influences. They first burst onto the scene in 2019 with the Thai psychrock-influenced The Rabbit that Hunts Tigers, which they performed across several shows to great reception, including at the famed Lowlands festival. During the pandemic, the band wrote and recorded The Age of Aquarius, later released in 2022. Described as spiritual and cosmic, the record retained the band’s distinct Southeast Asian influence while diving even deeper into dancefloor propulsion and space travel atmospherics.
YĪN YĪN marked yet another evolution with their 2024 album, Mount Matsu, the first record collectively created by all members of the band. Deeply informed by both the imaginative sound waves of the cosmos as well as the earthly musical culture of Japan, Mount Matsu is infectious, strangely harmonious and highly energetic. The album’s sound is somewhat of a synthesis of their first two records, utilising pentatonic scales and vintage synthesisers for their signature sound, built on a solid foundation of psychedelic disco, fat global funk, electronics and tribal experiments.
Making their way to Singapore for the first time, YĪN YĪN invites you into their expansive sonic cosmos: join the fray and let your fantasy run wild, dance your heart out and ascend Mount Matsu with YĪN YĪN.

Rising to prominence in the 2010s amidst a surge of left-of-center indie pop, Beach Fossils quickly amassed a loyal cult following thanks to its dreamy, far-away sound, grounded by dreary, realist lyricism. Throughout the last fifteen years, they have steadily earned their stature as one of the most definitive and enduring bands emerging from the 2010s New York underground. They consistently reach new listeners thanks to the steady evolution of their sound from the DIY solo project of Dustin Payseur to an influential self-produced four-piece dream pop band, where Payseur is joined by core band members Tommy Davidson (guitar), Jack Doyle Smith (bass), and Anton Hochheim (drums).
Now, after seven years, this iconic quartet returns to Singapore with new material alongside fan favourite songs, drawing from beloved albums such as the recently-released Bunny (2023), the jangly melancholy of their self-titled 2010 album, the gritty post-punk inspired Class the Truth (2013), and many more. Through tone and mood, Beach Fossils communicate a coming-of-age narrative of self-discovery. Payseur’s slice-of-life lyrics reflect on depression, love, adventure, loss, mistakes, New York City, friendships coming and going—a mélange of granular pieces in the process of continuing to find yourself.

Mattude is a project where I document the effects of reclamation projects along the coast of Makassar, my hometown in South Sulawesi in Indonesia. Mattude – a local term which means “collecting the clams” – has also come to represent my way of collecting and sharing stories about the resilience of the coastal women of Makassar.
The Makassar city government’s reclamation plans echoes similar developments throughout Indonesia. Reclamation in Makassar started in the late 1990s with road construction, then housing areas, flats, hotels, malls, a new port, and more. To date, 209 hectares of land have been reclaimed, and it is expected that thousands more hectares will be created along the west and north of Makassar’s coastline. The Makassar City Spatial Plan anticipates that reclamation will expand 26% of the city area.
Before reclamation began, the coast of Makassar was a lively fishing community where people could get various types of fish, clams and crabs. For the coastal women, the sea was a means of livelihood, a shared social space, a playground for their children, and a sacred place for rituals.
According to indigenous coastal beliefs, ancestors are thought to live in the water in various forms. There are crocodiles, snakes, dolphins, fish, centipedes, they say. In Bugis and Makassar culture, many still believe that each person has twin crocodiles. We call these ancestors ‘Nene’ or grandmother. During certain celebrations, offerings must be lowered into the sea or river as a sign of gratitude to the grandmother, ancestors, and nature. These rituals are said to prevent bad luck and disaster, and are led by women.
As reclamation continues, the livelihoods and practices of coastal communities have come increasingly under threat. They have lost touch with coastal creatures and tide changes. They are losing their physical and spiritual relationship to the sea.
Since 2017, the coastal women of Makassar have gathered as a means of survival and resistance. They organize protests against the reclamation, and find other ways of making a living. As the excavators reclaim the coast, these women seek to reclaim their own narratives.

Join in the fight against the second most common cancer across both men and women in Singapore with 365 Cancer Prevention Society’s (365CPS) #My1stColonoscopy free screening campaign. Now in its fourth year, this initiative – jointly organised by 365CPS and Icon Cancer Centre, provides seamless access to sponsored colonoscopy for lower-income individuals aged between 45 to 70 from now to 30 April 2025.
Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the colon, residing in the large intestine. It is sometimes referred to as colon cancer or rectal cancer, depending on where it starts. According to the Singapore Cancer Registry Annual Report 2022 released by the National Registry of Diseases Office in September 2024, it is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among both men and women in Singapore, with approximately 1,400 new cases each year. The overall lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer in the country is around 5.6%.
Colorectal cancer is often a silent disease which presents no symptoms in the early stages. When symptoms do occur, they may include rectal bleeding or blood in stools, persistent diarrhoea or constipation, abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight loss or constant fatigue. Regular screening is crucial, as colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when detected early. Screening also aids in identifying and removing pre-cancerous polyps before they develop into cancer.

Step into the shade of the Albizia tree (Albizia moluccana), a resilient migrant tree species that has quietly spread and flourished in rewilding green spaces across Singapore’s landscape, forming isolated islands amid Singapore’s urban concrete jungle. 5 Albizias, a travelling showcase by artist Robert Zhao Renhui, explores the history of the Albizia tree in Singapore, tracing its origins to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia, where the fast-growing species often populates areas marked by human intervention and natural disturbances.
Through striking visuals of five Albizias—four from across Singapore in Tampines, Punggol, Jurong, and Woodlands, corresponding to the showcase venues—and one from the Maluku Islands, 5 Albizias invites visitors to examine the impact human actions have on these spaces and the dynamic interplay between native and non-native, natural and artificial. By spotlighting the resilience of these often-overlooked trees, the exhibition brings to the fore their essential role in rewilding disturbed land, creating pockets of green where life can thrive anew.
Presented by Singapore Art Museum, 5 Albizias takes Zhao’s explorations of the Albizia tree into the heartlands. Beginning at Punggol Regional Library, the showcase will travel to the following locations from 18 December 2024 to 29 June 2025:

RASA’s first official techno Saturday night welcomes Berghain resident Answer Code Request to RASA Floor, with support from local guest Maurice Simon and Midnight Shift’s Haan. Patrick Gräser, the man behind Answer Code Request, has become a familiar face in Singapore’s underground scene, having performed in the country at various venues multiple times over the past decade.
He entered the world of techno 2001, but it was his 2011 “Subway Into” EP that propelled him to global recognition, leading to releases on coveted labels like Marcel Dettmann’s MDR and Berghain’s in-house label, Ostgut Ton.
Gräser’s productions combine pad-driven harmonies with industrial textures, while his DJ sets bring together various strains of techno. He plays dubby bangers, energetic acid-tinged rave anthems, and blissed-out minimalism, occasionally throwing in uplifting piano house for good measure. This balanced mix of enjoyment and dancefloor energy reflects a DJ who is confident and versatile behind the decks.
Since becoming a Berghain resident in 2012, Answer Code Request has performed at clubs and festivals worldwide, including Dekmantel, Sonar, and Fabric while remaining an integral part of the Berlin scene, embodying the city’s techno spirit wherever he plays.

Family, art, and entrepreneurship converge in the story of three visionary Peranakan women from Indonesia – Nyonya Oeij Soen King, her daughter-in-law Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing, and her granddaughter Jane Hendromartono. From the 1890s to 1980s, they produced impressive batiks in the renowned batik centre of Pekalongan on Java’s north coast.
Featuring about 200 batik textiles and accompanying objects, Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship examines the lives and careers of these Peranakan women through their works. With batik as a portrait of society, the exhibition reveals the influence of the Oeij family women as they became batik masters in their own right, as they ingeniously responded to the rapid political, cultural and economic changes of their time to run a business that produced great art. Visitors are invited to draw links to the development and evolution of Indonesian batik through a Peranakan perspective, and to participate in hands-on workshops, performances and tours. The exhibition will also feature a contemporary art commission by Aiko Tezuka, an artist specialised in producing art based on the unravelling of woven fabric.

If house music were a kingdom, Cinthie ( @cinthie_dj ) would be ruling it with a vinyl-covered scepter. A German producer, DJ, record store queen, and the undisputed Berlin Goddess of House.
For the last decade, she’s been absolutely unstoppable, globe-trotting to some of the coolest clubs and festivals across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and—well, probably everywhere else, too.
Cinthie’s got an encyclopedic knowledge of house music. Her DJ sets? Pure magic. She seamlessly blends the past and present, connecting New York’s swing, Chicago’s rawness, and Berlin’s electric energy into a groove so irresistible you won’t know whether to dance or cry—maybe both.
In the studio, she’s a master at turning the bare essentials into house music gold. Her tracks have graced legendary labels like Heist, Aus Music, and her own 803 Crystal Grooves. And let’s not forget her debut album Skylines – City Lights (2020), which made a huge splash. Oh, and her DJ-Kicks mix in 2022? Pure house music chef’s kiss.
Real, authentic, and always on point—this is what sets her apart in the house music world. Long story short: Cinthie’s not just playing house; she’s living it.

It’s looking like a night of pure Afro House bliss and your feet are going to be begging you for mercy!
With a mind as open as his track selection, James Selva ( @iriejamesy ) is all about marrying a mix of genres to stir up a little dancefloor delirium. He’s played everything from Wonderfruit to Ce La Vie, sharing stages with the likes of Sébastien Léger and Stephan Bodzin, and he’s here to guide you on a wild ride where the only rule is to never stop moving.
And then we’ve got Kolbotta ( @vtother ), a Frenchman with a decade of London seasoning, who’s now calling Singapore home. His sets? They’re a perfect blend of house, disco, and deep, rhythmic layers. From the grit of Hip Hop to the pulse of Techno, Vic Kolbotta’s style is refined, effortless, and absolutely built for the dancefloor.

If you haven’t heard of Nikki Nair ( @nikki__nair ), well then it’s about damn time that you do!
Last Saturdays ( @lastsaturdays_sg ) & Behind The Green Door are shipping in this American music producer and DJ who is basically the mad scientist of the electronic music world. If you think his tracks have any kind of “predictable” vibe, think again. Nikki’s music is like that weird-but-awesome sandwich you make at 2 a.m. — somehow it works even though it shouldn’t.
Man is on a mission to create beats that are deep, silly, chaotic, and yet somehow make you want to dance like no one’s watching. He’s got this magical ability to juggle contradictions, mixing the bizarre with the catchy, all while keeping things refreshingly honest and easy on the ears. It’s no wonder he’s carved out his own quirky little corner in the wild world of electronic music.
When Nikki hits the decks, get ready for a genre-hopping rollercoaster of all sorts. No matter how wild the mix seems on paper, Nikki’s always got one goal: to keep the dancefloor alive with that perfect balance of tension, drama, and absolute euphoria.
And as for Nikki himself? Well, he’s all about pushing his music into new, unexplored territory. It’s about distilling chaos into something unexpectedly beautiful — all while trying to catch that elusive “new idea” he’s always chasing. As he puts it best: “My released music will always change, but it’ll always be raw because it’s only good when I’m grasping at new ideas.” So buckle up — with Nikki, you’re in for one heck of a ride & no complaints, we’re here for it!

We’re throwing a spanner into the works with this unexpected trio 🚩
Like how dynamite comes in small packages, Kylie Nicole knows how to pack a big punch, fusing R&B, Hip-Hop, and techno into her own deliciously spicy sound—aka Ghetto House. Picture “White Chicks” and “Space Jam” having a baby, and you’re halfway there. Her sets are filled with cheeky breaks, garage, and old-school rap that’s impossible to sit still to. Don’t let her petite size fool you—this pocket rocket knows how to make a bang chilli padi style.
David Carollo, a veteran DJ and half of the techno duo A1kS. This guy has been on the scene since 2005, and if you think his experience ends there, think again. He started with an old stereo and some bootleg radio recordings—now he’s playing at some of the most iconic spots around the world. From Italy to Singapore, David brings a broad mix of deep, funky, soulful, and tech house with a sprinkle of analog magic. He’s basically the Swiss army knife of DJs—except instead of tools, he’s armed with beats that will leave you wanting more.
Last but not least, Eden YC, the Shanghai-born, Singapore-raised DJ who knows how to blend bass, house, disco, and soul into a musical feast for the ears. Whether he’s getting London’s Silver Bullet club to chant his name or slaying festivals in Berlin, Eden’s versatility knows no bounds. From collaborations with big names to his upcoming music label “Great Wall of Sound,” Eden’s got his finger on the pulse of global music culture. Plus, he’s got a cool residency at Louis Vuitton Singapore—fancy!
Ready to dance? You should be.

Step into Seeing Forest, presented for the first time in Singapore at Singapore Art Museum (SAM) at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. Returning from Venice, this exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Robert Zhao Renhui invites visitors to immerse themselves in the multifaceted life of Singapore’s secondary forests—overlooked forests regrown from deforested land due to human intervention. Drawing on nearly a decade of research, Zhao encourages audiences to look beyond our familiar cityscape and uncover the complex ecosystems that shape our natural environment.
Visitors will be able to catch the full assemblage of videos and sculptural installations presented in Venice, transforming SAM’s gallery space into an enveloping, forested zone filled with sounds, sights, and stories that convey the richness of secondary forests. Through Zhao’s captivating scenes of these in-between spaces, spot sambar deer that escaped from the local zoo in the 1970s, Japanese sparrowhawks pausing for a drink and a wild boar giving birth in the forest next to the artist’s apartment.
Seeing Forest was first presented at the Singapore Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (Biennale Arte 2024), widely recognised as the Olympics of the art world. From Venice to SAM’s home ground, the exhibition invites audiences to discover a lesser-known side of Singapore, and reflect on their place within these wild, yet radically free environments.

The Red Pencil (Singapore), a registered IPC charity dedicated to harnessing the transformative power of art therapy, is thrilled to announce its inaugural Art to HeART Charity Gala Dinner. The event will take place on 26th April 2025, at 6:30pm, at Hotel JEN Singapore Tanglin. This elegant evening promises to be a celebration of art, music, and mental well-being, all in support of a noble cause.
Since its establishment in 2011, The Red Pencil (Singapore) has been a beacon of hope for vulnerable individuals, using art therapy to help them express emotions that are often difficult to verbalise. By partnering with schools, foster homes, social service agencies and health organisations, the charity integrates creative arts therapy into psycho-social programmes, fostering long-term mental resilience.
The charity’s first-ever gala aims to raise $300,000 to support the charity’s growing operating costs and expand access to art therapy, ensuring it remains affordable for all. Funds raised will provide critical mental health resources to individuals in need, empowering them to heal and thrive.
Highlights of the Evening:
• Guest of Honour: The event will be graced by Ms Sun Xueling, Minister of State at the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Social and Family Development, whose presence underscores the importance of mental health advocacy.
• Headliner Performance: Local pop duo Tokyo Square (Max Surin & Linda Elizabeth), renowned for their iconic 80s hit Within You’ll Remain, will take the stage to deliver a high-energy performance that promises to captivate the audience.
• Live and Silent Auctions: Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on exclusive items, including a signed vinyl by Singaporean songbird Kit Chan, adding a touch of nostalgia and glamour to the evening.
• Hands-On Art Therapy: In a unique and immersive experience, guests will participate in hands-on art therapy sessions led by credentialed art therapists, celebrating the spirit of mental well-being in a truly interactive way.

Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai to San Francisco reunites a set of 84 hand-carved model pagodas for the first time in over a century. Originally made in Shanghai, they travelled thousands of miles away to San Francisco for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 – a massive world’s fair that attracted over 18 million visitors during its 288-day run.
Exquisitely detailed, the models are based on real structures, and embody the diversity of iconic pagodas from different regions and historical periods. For many visitors to the exposition, they offered a first, tantalising glimpse of China’s rich architectural heritage. Together with related works, they paint a vivid picture of cosmopolitan Shanghai and San Francisco at the turn of the twentieth century.
Pagoda Odyssey will be complemented by Towers of Faith, a photography display of religious landmarks in Singapore, and Journey into the Pagoda, a virtual reality fantasy experience. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a series of public programmes, including weekend festivals, curator-led tours, and talks.

The Private Museum is delighted to present ‘Love Connects: My Life in Dance’ by Goh Soo Khim, a book launch accompanied by a special exhibition that offers a glimpse into her journey in dance, her artistic influences, and her enduring legacy in the cultural landscape in Singapore.
Cultural Medallion recipient Goh Soo Khim is a pioneering figure whose influence extends far beyond the stage. As co-founder of the Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT), now known as Singapore Ballet, the doyenne has shaped the landscape of dance in Singapore, nurturing generations of dancers.
Her memoir, as told by Phan Ming Yen, traces a life in motion—chronicling the triumphs, sacrifices, and the devotion that have defined her life in dance and beyond. In dialogue with the book, the exhibition explores vignettes of life-long relationships forged through art and poignant moments from her time with SDT.
The exhibition presents a series of photographs by Robin PE Chee and Tan Ngiap Heng, long-time photographers who have documented SDT’s performances for decades—alongside an intimate selection of works from her private collection, featuring renowned and established artists whose works resonate with her journey. Through the lens of photography and the visual arts, it highlights the artistic collaborations, shared influences, and her enduring love for the arts.
At the heart of both the book and the exhibition is a singular theme—love. Love, in its purest form, is the driving force behind all that Goh Soo Khim has built: the communities she has nurtured, the dancers she has inspired, and the legacy she continues to shape.

“PE*IS” is a devised performance responding to “Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral”.
One of theatre doyen Kuo Pao Kun’s most well-known and beloved plays, “Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral” was first staged in 1995 by TheatreWorks (now T:>Works) as part of the Festival of Asian Performing Arts. “Descendants” explored the life and times of Admiral Zheng He, the legendary eunuch of China – his infamous castration and his historically renowned maritime expeditions in the 1400s. It drew parallels between his experiences, and the sacrifices made and struggles faced by Singapore’s ‘cultural orphans’ of the 1990s.
In commemoration of the play’s 30th anniversary, 2025 sees six students from the National University of Singapore’s Theatre & Performance Studies TS3103 Theatre Lab presenting “PE*IS”, a performance-response that delves into the themes, core issues, and dramaturgy of “Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral”.
Join us on 12 April at the Black Box, 42 Waterloo Street, to experience this performance-response and take a tumultuous voyage that explores autonomy, identity, and censorship.

Cuturi Gallery proudly presents Some Things Last a Long Time by Israfil Ridhwan (b.1999, Singapore). Curated by Louis Ho, this exhibition marks his third solo show with the gallery. Israfil Ridhwan’s latest series of paintings are an insight into an intimate reflection, filled with personal vignettes and filmic moments.
Israfil’s visual syntax may be understood as drawing on the lineage of queer representation, and its codes, in art history and filmic language. The autobiographical character of his work, read within the context of LGBTQ visual culture, is shot through with a referentiality that commemorates the queer vocabularies of canvas and screen.
The engagement with cinema, for one, is discernible in his compositional strategies. The paintings in the current show present a series of personal vignettes almost in the manner of filmic moments, with the artist relaying on the analogy to the moving image to characterize one of their most striking formal qualities: “When I look at my works, I’d like to imagine a camera panning out like in the movies as the subject/subjects do what they do.”
Take Epilogue (2025), for instance. The only solo portrait in the exhibition portrays a figure – who appears to vaguely resemble an older version of Israfil himself – caught in the throes of doleful reflection. The wealth of details in the composition immediately suggests an entire narrative universe summed up in a single instant: the unexplained locks of hair and a pair of scissors, suggesting a recent snip (a reaction to heartbreak or an unusual act of self-care, perhaps); the smartphone on the toilet seat playing Serge Gainsbourg’s “La Chanson de Prévert”, a tune that mourns lost love. That this tableau could have been a painterly recreation of a particular scene from a movie may well be imagined, a synecdochical split second of solitary sadness.
The intertextuality of Israfil’s pictorial language is also attested to by references to art history. The pair of bodies seemingly engaged in a wrestling match in Card player (2025) is a dramatization of a one-sided relationship that he once endured, the entanglement ending only when he caught the other party with someone else. The incongruous playing cards tucked into the waistband of a pair of underpants are a direct citation of Caravaggio’s The Cardsharps (c. 1595) – the cards are similar down to their suits, clubs and hearts – transforming the act of swindling depicted in the earlier painting into the aftermath of romantic dishonesty. Elsewhere, the guilt, anger and shame that the artist experienced as a teenager, during a series of encounters with a neighbour, is clearly communicated in the eyes of the figure in green in Conversations with Mr. Guilt (2025).
Some Things Last a Long Time will be on view at 61 Aliwal Street, S199937, from 12 April – 17 May 2025.

Whitestone Gallery is excited to announce Story Keepers: Tales and Traditions, an exhibition that celebrates the timeless influence of storytelling across Japan. Through contemporary art, the exhibition delves into key themes of transformation, spirituality, and identity, offering fresh interpretations of traditional stories. This captivating show explores how ancient tales and folklore have shaped, and evolved, yet continue to resonate in the modern world.
At the core of this exhibition are spiritual, transformative, and symbolic elements embedded in tales from Japan. These stories are rich in metaphor, and are interwoven with the human experience, nature, and the unseen forces that shape and inhabit our universe simultaneously. By uncovering the dynamic connections that bind the past with the present, Story Keepers: Tales and Traditions highlights the enduring power of these narratives, encouraging audiences to consider their lasting impact on both personal and collective identities. Gathering five contemporary artists: C.K Koh, Kazuyuki Futagawa, Maoka Ueda, Masatake Kozaki, and Yoshiaki Nakamura, the artists of Story Keepers: Tales and Traditions portray their reinterpretations of these traditional narratives through their unique artistic practices; each offering a unique artistic interpretation of stories. Together, their works explore the central motifs in ancient legends, while remaining relevant to foster a dialogue between the archaic and contemporary.
C.K Koh developed his signature Box Head character as a response to the myth of Pandora’s Box, symbolizing the search for hidden hope amidst the monstrous, grotesque, and imperfect aspects of the world. Koh navigates the complexities of life through children’s books and illustrations, as the stories delve into themes of hope in an imperfect world, the structure of truth and deceit, and the eternal battle between what is right and wrong; he offers his critical reflection on modern societal, political, and cultural environments.
Kazuyuki Futagawa’s works blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary abstraction, exploring the cycles of life and the theory of renewal—a concept foundational to many myths. His intricate paintings of traditional landscapes paired with the use of human silhouettes evoke a sense of mystery, reflecting the deep interconnection between nature, humans, and spiritual forces. Through symbolic abstraction, Futagawa invites viewers to contemplate the relationship between everlasting nature and temporal human kind, suggesting that the everlasting process of change found in folklore is still deeply embedded in our world today.
Yoshiaki Nakamura’s vibrant works explore the duality of existence, drawing inspiration from his contemplation of the relationship between God and man, as well as the meaning of the universe. The butterfly, a central motif in his art, symbolizes both the turmoil he has endured and the hope he has found—a metaphor that resonates not only with ancient Japanese traditions, but also with today’s world of uncertainty. For Nakamura, the butterfly represents an animistic spirit that serves as a beacon of optimism amidst life’s challenges, embodying the cycle of life.
Maoka Ueda’s ethereal compositions capture the ephemeral essence of Japanese folklore, where she portrays spiritual journeys and encounters with kami—spirits of nature in Japanese belief, as well as Japan’s Shinto tradition, where all things are seen as imbued with spiritual energy. Ueda softens the unsaid tension in these tales, encouraging audiences to look beyond their unsettling aspects, by creating an environment to confront the subtle eerie contexts inherent in many narratives, inviting an acceptance towards these stories as a whole. Her art offers a visual experience that encourages pondering on the profound and often unseen connections between nature, spirit, and self. Through this approach, Ueda brings to life the intangible qualities of her culture’s legends, highlighting the temporal and the ever-changing nature of existence.
Masatake Kozaki’s work bridges traditional Japanese cultural elements with modern techniques, blending rich materials such as mineral pigments, gold, and silver leaves to create dynamic visual textures. His paintings often feature motifs such as Kokeshi and Daruma dolls, as well as landscapes from his native Japanese region, Tohoku. He captures the essence of local traditions and narratives passed down, exploring tougen-kyo—the mythical concept of an earthly paradise, reflecting upon his engagement with the idea of timelessness, inviting viewers to reflect on his contemporary interpretation of the enduring power of these stories.
Story Keepers: Tales and Traditions seeks to exemplify how a single narrative can be reinterpreted in diverse ways through art, bridging the gap between traditional and modern life. Experience how these five artists offer their unique and fresh perspective on olden narratives at Whitestone Gallery

The decision to host the IFATCA 64 conference in Abu Dhabi UAE, a rapidly growing aviation hub, underscores the region’s strategic importance and the increasing prominence of the Mid Region in the global ATC and aviation landscape. As a major international airports and a hub for several leading airlines, Abu Dhabi offers a prime location for professionals to convene and discuss the industry’s most pressing issues.
Furthermore, the UAE’s commitment to innovation, sustainability and accomplishments in the ATC sector in particular and the aviation industry in general aligns with IFATCA’s vision “IFATCA is the global voice of Air Traffic Controllers. It furthers air traffic safety, influences the sustainable evolution of aviation, and embraces all members of its community. The apolitical federation provides guidance, representation, training, and other services to advance the status and professionalism of air traffic control. It collaborates with other international organizations to achieve mutual goals.” The conference will provide a unique opportunity for delegates to explore the latest advancements in air traffic management technology and to collaborate on initiatives that promote environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability within the industry.

This is not your average documentary workshop. It’s not about the latest gear, or the trendiest topic, or how to make your video go viral. This is about how life is often stranger than fiction, what the functions and techniques of documentary are, and how to tell a compelling non-fiction story for the screen.
The process of ideating, producing, filming, editing your own documentary, plus overcoming the various challenges that will come along with making a documentary, will be the craft journey you will embark upon as a class across the 6 sessions.
By the end of the workshop, you will have made a documentary that you can truly call your own, and present it to the class in a film screening.
There will also be a screening of films by the class which is open to friends and family at the end of the workshop.

The Wizard is calling! Step into the Emerald City in 2025 as WICKED, the award-winning musical from Broadway returns to cast its magical spell at Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands once more.
Just over 20 years since its premiere, WICKED remains one of the most successful and popular musicals in the world, having been seen by over 67 million people worldwide. Winner of over 100 major awards, including the Grammy Award, the Olivier Award, six Helpmann Awards, three Tony Awards® and six Drama Desk Awards, WICKED is “A Complete Triumph! An original musical that will make you laugh, cry and think” (USA Today).
The Broadway sensation WICKED looks at what happened in the Land of Oz… but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin, who is smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships… until the world decides to call one “good”, and the other one “wicked”.
Tickets for WICKED can be purchased through Marina Bay Sands, SISTIC, and Klook.

For two decades, the UK’s Stopgap Dance Company has been an exemplar of diversity and inclusion on stage, using dance as a movement for change. As a global leader of inclusive dance, Stopgap strives to not only showcase Disabled talent, but also enable performances to be accessible to as many and diverse audiences as possible. With this in mind, Stopgap presents Lived Fiction, a performance with the potential to shape the future of experiencing contemporary dance from multiple perspectives.
A manifestation of Stopgap’s 20 year history, Lived Fiction is an atmospheric, multisensory work that blends sensual choreography with innovative sound and visual design with accessibility features creatively weaved in. This includes evocative audio description, as well as projection art and audio captioning—a groundbreaking production where access features for Deaf or hard of hearing, blind or low vision, Disabled and neurodivergent audiences have been intricately intertwined throughout the performance.
Featuring seven performers with and without disabilities, the production spotlights each performer’s experiences and stories through movement and spoken word. Across two acts, solo, duet and group performances unfold, reflecting each individual’s relationship with dance and movement, their lived realities and with one another. Earnest and contemplative with elements of playfulness, this dance work resonates in its compassion for the human condition, empowering audiences to experience dance and life itself, through a myriad of different perspectives.
Lived Fiction invites you to come participate in this microcosm of an inclusive world, where everyone can revel in the joy of a shared future that is rich with the enterprise, potential and the power of diversity.
Creative Access
We would like both the performers and the audience to gain a shared-experience and revel in the joy of different people cohabiting the theatre space. Lived Fiction is a collaboration between artists and creatives who are Deaf, Disabled, neurodivergent and non-disabled, and equipped with the following access features:
– Assistive Listening (AL)
– Audio Captioning (CAP)
– Audio Description (AD)
– Relaxed Environment (RE) performances
– A 30-min Touch Tour before each performance
– Post-show talk after each performance, with Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) interpretation

The historic Battlebox at Fort Canning will become a dynamic canvas this March as Global Cultural Alliance (GCA) presents Portals, an innovative visual arts exhibition that bridges Singapore’s wartime history with creative technology to redefine artmaking for technologists and luddites alike.
Running from 28 March to 29 June 2025, Portals is commissioned as part of cmd.exe (“command prompt”), a groundbreaking platform launched by TRCL that explores the convergence of heritage and creative technology. Set within the atmospheric World War II bunker, the exhibition features seven Singapore-based artists whose works will transform this historical space into an immersive, multi-sensory experience.
Curated by Jonathan Liu and Shireen Marican, the exhibition showcases works by Anthony Chin, Dongyan Chen, Ernest Wu, Jake Tan, Huijun Lu, Victoria Hertel, and Zul Mahmod. Each artist harnesses technology to reinterpret the Battlebox’s rich history, creating interactive installations that invite visitors to engage with Singapore’s past in unprecedented ways. Through dynamic visuals, soundscapes, and sensory installations, Portals explores themes such as power, surveillance, conflict, time, and the intersection of nature and defense. Guests will experience reimagined wartime communication systems, immersive light displays, and installations that respond to sound and movement, creating a bridge between history and contemporary perspectives.
To further expand the creative possibilities of the exhibition, Portals has collaborated with creative technology studio SERIAL CO_, which serves as a technical mentor to the participating artists. This partnership allows the artists to experiment with new tools and techniques, enhancing their creative process and refining the technical execution of their installations.

Two decades of absolute electricity culminates in one explosive tour: Beginning in 2024, Death From Above 1979 (DFA 1979) celebrates the 20th anniversary of their debut LP You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine, a genre-bending iconoclastic cult classic that sounds as fresh today as it did in 2004. Dubbed “dance-punk” by the UK press, their music doesn’t merely suggest, it commands those who hear it to the grimy, feverish and dimly-lit dance floor.
To celebrate, the band are playing furiously around the world while endeavouring on a year-long recording project to reinvigorate and honour their iconic flagship album. 20 years is a long time for rock ‘n’ roll, but the odometer turns slowly for this power duo. As explosive as ever, DFA 1979 summons their fans to the pit to revel in their uniquely infectious, high-octane rock n’ roll.

The annual InsureXpo, by CIMB, is back bigger and better this year, with over 20 speakers and experts, on 12 April 2025 at Suntec Convention Centre Halls 405 and 406.
Themed “From Protection to Prosperity”, the event will bring together industry leaders and experts across private and public sectors to share insights on insurance, retirement, and wealth across different life stages.
Agenda Highlights:
Mr. Alvin Tan, Minister of State for Community, Culture and Youth, and Trade and Industry, and Board Member of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, will be gracing the event as the Guest-of-Honour.
In addition to industry deep dives and market outlooks, a thoughtfully curated series of talks and panel discussions on personal finance topics such as securing financial freedom through insurance, to educate and help people build their economic and financial resilience for a better future.
Raymond Tan, Head of Wealth Management and Preferred Banking, CIMB Singapore, will unpack key findings from their latest report, “CIMB Singapore: Attitudes and Beliefs towards Financial Independence Report 2025”, in collaboration with Nanyang Centre for Marketing and Technology (research centre under Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University), on retirement preparedness in Singapore.
Public sector organizations such as CPF Board, Singapore Police Force and Mindline, along with insurers Singlife, FWD, Income, AIA, Manulife, and Tokio Marine, and personal finance content creators such as The Woke Salaryman, and SG Budget Babe will be addressing pressing topics in insurance, financial planning and well-being. We are also partnering with the National Youth Council and Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth (MCCY) to explore a youth-specific session featuring youth leaders.
The ticket for InsureXpo 2025 is priced at S$20, and includes full access to all keynotes, breakout sessions, and exhibition booths. We recognise that there are key audience members who would benefit from this event and gain skills in financial literacy. Hence, in support of SG60, we are working closely with MCCY’s Singapore Government Partnerships Office to contribute complimentary tickets to select audiences.

As April draws to a close, Floor welcomes British DJ and music producer Call Super, accompanied by RASA residents Daryl Knows, Leland and local guest, Daytime Dancing.
Call Super, the primary alias of Joseph Richmond-Seaton, has carved his own niche in electronic music. His career took off with the release of ‘The Present Tense’ on Houndstooth, the label arm of famed London club, fabric, followed by ‘Black Octagons’ and ‘Depicta/Acephale’, which marked him as a disruptor in the electronic music scene.
Call Super’s debut album “Suzi Ecto” (2014) and follow-up “Arpo” (2017) received critical acclaim from Pitchfork and The Guardian. The latter was hailed as “outstanding” by The Guardian and named Album of the Year by DJ Mag. His collaborations with Beatrice Dillon for Hessle Audio and releases for Dekmantel have been compared to Ricardo Villalobos, Jon Hassell, and Brian Eno.
His versatility is seen in the range of his schedule, from headline slots at Sónar festival’s 25th anniversary in Barcelona, to the basement of the intimate Sameheads bar in Berlin. Call Super is a natural musical communicator pushing on in his own world, one that has guided him outwards and upwards.
