You’ve ticked off your Christmas to-do list, checked it twice… and now it’s time for some merrymaking. Over at the Science Centre Singapore, you’ll find the stage set for a very jolly Yule this year indeed. Think an icy wonderland at Snow City Singapore, a sleighful of tech-fuelled festive games, carols, and even an enchanting tour across the Christmas night sky. Here’s our lowdown on the festive fun.
Chill Out at the Ice Hotel Gallery
Singapore might not have a winter season, but we can still enjoy a white Christmas over at Snow City. Bringing us a whiff of the Arctic is the snow centre’s newest permanent exhibit: the Ice Hotel Gallery. Stretching across a 17-metre snow field, Singapore’s first ice hotel whisks you away to a wintry kingdom. Stroll your way through marvellous ice scenes of flora and fauna, sculpted by local artisan Jeffrey Ng – you’ll even spot an ice Merlion and an ice mermaid splendidly enthroned. Snag a seat at the Ice Bar, decked with chairs and cups intricately wrought with ice, then visit the Hotel Room with its queen bed carved from massive ice blocks.
Snow City Singapore is open daily 10am–6pm between 20 November and 3 January 2022. Admission is priced from S$16.80 for a Snow Play Session + Drift on Ice Bumper Car, inclusive of the Ice Hotel Gallery experience.
Get Hands-On With Christmas Challenges
The festivities get a science-fuelled spin with Science Centre Singapore’s Sci-sational Christmas lineup. To create your very own Christmas card, head down to the Shape of Christmas workshop to design an extra-sparkly card with a LED bulb. Then find out whether you’ve been naughty or nice – or at least, warm or cold – at an exhibit on thermal cameras and the technology behind them: Are You Hot or Cool This Season? Finally, drop by Santa’s Mind Challenge to put on your special Christmas hat and play a little game. The challenge is to stay calm – because Santa will know when you’re getting too stirred up.
Sci-sational Christmas at the Science Centre Singapore runs from 1 December 2021 to 3 January 2022. Open daily 10am–1pm & 2pm-5pm.
Enjoy Sight & Sound at Da Vinci, The Exhibition
What’s Christmas without some enchanting carols? For one day only, award-winning choral conductor Toh Ban Sheng will give a performance at Da Vinci, The Exhibition. Dubbed Sight & Sound, his performance will bring to life the spirit of the Renaissance in festive style. Following that, you can enjoy an exploration of Southeast Asia’s largest collection of da Vinci’s works. The exhibition features over 50 life-sized replicas of the Renaissance genius’ inventions, along with reproductions of his most celebrated paintings – among them the iconic Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Sight & Sound at Da Vinci, The Exhibition is happening on 18 December 2021, 12.15pm & 2.15pm. À la carte tickets to Da Vinci, The Exhibition are priced from S$15 for adult peak day admission; an Adult Half-Day Pass is priced from S$23.90 and includes Science Centre admission, entry to Da Vinci, The Exhibition, and a S$5 Curiosity Shop Voucher.
Explore the Christmas Night Sky
Christmas lights aren’t the only thing twinkling this festive season. The Omni-Theatre has lined up a special Live Planetarium Show for an enchanting journey across the star-speckled Christmas night sky. On this live tour, the Science Educator will point out the constellations and other cosmic delights visible in the current night sky, woven with intriguing stories about the stars. Talk about a celestial Christmas tree!
What’s Up There?: Live Planetarium Show runs from 20 to 24 December 2021, 5pm-5.45pm, at the Omni-Theatre. Admission is priced at S$14.
Catch the Santa’s Surprise Party Science Show
Perfect for the little ones, the Santa’s Surprise Party Science Show promises to double the Christmas enchantment with the magic of science! Christmas has rolled around once more, and Santa’s elves are hard at work making toys. Two elves, however, are busily crafting a surprise party for Santa with fun decorations, food and drinks. Cheer them on as they pull out all the stops, and prepare to be surprised!
Santa’s Surprise Party Science Show runs from 1 December 2021 to 3 January 2022 at Maxwell Auditorium, Hall B, Science Centre Singapore. Open daily 11am & 3pm. Admission is priced at S$5 (separate from Science Centre admission charges).
