As part of Shakespeare’s Globe grand plan to bring Hamlet to every country in the world, the famous tragic story of a young Danish prince driven to avenge his father’s murder will unfold at the historic Capitol Theatre Singapore from September 8th to 12th, 2015.
The 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth on 23 April 2014 witnessed a bold undertaking by Shakespeare’s Globe to bring Hamlet on a two-year global tour. This unprecedented theatrical adventure – Globe to Globe Hamlet – reinforces the Globe’s commitment to internationalise one of Shakespeare’s most enduring plays.
Globe to Globe Hamlet will be the first international production to grace the stage of the Grande Dame, but with only five performances in Singapore – one of the few countries to enjoy the most number of performances – be sure to book your tickets early to secure a seat at the intimate venue.
In just two hours and forty minutes, a company of twelve actors delivers this fresh, travelling version of Globe to Globe Hamlet in brisk clarity, without the longueurs from the Elizabethan era. With a spirit of improvisation, expect to see a modular travelling set with no-frills, designed to suit varying performing venues.
‘ABA Productions is extremely pleased to partner Shakespeare’s Globe, one of the best theatre production companies in the world, to bring Globe to Globe Hamlet to the newly restored Capitol Theatre Singapore. To appreciate one of Shakespeare’s best-known pieces in such a beautiful landmark so rich in history, is a cultural event not to be missed. Due to the size of the venue, tickets are very limited so we expect it to sell-out in no time,’ said Mr Matthew Gregory, Executive Producer of ABA Productions.
‘In 1608, only five years after it was written, Hamlet was performed on a boat – the Red Dragon – off the coast of Yemen. Just ten years later it was being toured extensively all over Northern Europe. The spirit of touring, and of communicating stories to fresh ears, was always central to Shakespeare’s work. We couldn’t be happier to be extending that mission even further. By train, coach, plane and boat, we aim to take this wonderful, iconic, multifarious play to as many fresh ears as we possibly can,’ said Dominic Dromgoole, The Globe’s Artistic Director.
Globe to Globe Hamlet will be staged in 205 nations across 7 continents in venues from village squares to national theatres, palaces to beaches, before the tour concludes, fittingly enough, at Hamlet’s own Elsinore Castle on 23 April 2016. This is also the date that coincides with the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.
Hamlet is running from Tuesday, 8 September to Saturday, 12 September at Capitol Theatre.
