A French Kiss in Singapore is a one-of-a-kind musical revue about love, the perfect show to warm your hearts before Christmas! Brought to you by the same team as the sold-out ‘A Singaporean in Paris’, this brand new revue illustrates the humorous, touching and capricious nature of love.
The four lovely gentlemen who are ready to charm you are Hossan Leong, George Chan, Linden Furnell and Robin Goh. They will make you (re)discover love songs from four of France’s most beloved contemporary songwriters and singers: Charles Aznavour, Serge Gainsbourg, Charles Trenet and Jacques Brel. These artists have been a source of inspiration for generations of international stars: Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, David Bowie, Marlene Dietrich, Sting, Robbie Williams, Westlife, to more recently Placebo, Franz Ferdinand, Jarvis Cooker, Portishead, The Rakes – who have performed their songs in English. A French Kiss in Singapore marks a come back to the musical revue genre that Sing’theatre is so renowned for. ‘It promises a sparkling entertainment show built on internationally famous songs presented in a fresh new way’, says Nathalie Ribette, Sing’theatre’s Artistic Director.
The journey begins with ‘Love is new everyday’ setting the tone of the evening, going through the joys to the pitfalls of love. From ‘Ne me quitte pas’ to ‘Lonely singing doll’ (Eurovision winner) through the scandalous, worldwide banned ‘I love you…me neither’, A French Kiss in Singapore will take you to an emotional rollercoaster ride! George Chan, Director of A French Kiss in Singapore had a ‘French revelation’ when first introduced to France’s best known singers and songwriters. ‘I am so excited to craft this show with wonderful songs and music (waltz, samba, pop, rap, ballads…) and stunning choreography that will resonate in everyone’s heart, Singaporean or not’, he says.
The new comer to this show is Australian Linden Furnell, who was in ‘Edges’ and ‘Next To Normal’. We asked him about being part of ‘A French Kiss In Singapore’:
‘I’m pretty stoked to be the token ‘Ang moh’. Damn shiok! Other than that, I’m excited to explore a huge catalogue of French music that I might not have discovered otherwise. I love the theatrical lyrics and the dark, cynical content you don’t tend to hear in western equivalents from the same period.
Preparation for me at the moment is familiarizing myself with these particular artists and their canon of work. An understanding of the composer’s life and time helps decrypt some of the content and shows the artist’s artistic identity. In simple terms, understanding what exactly it is you’re singing and why.’
