Review: Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket Brings A Blend of Thai Heritage and Modern Luxury To Bang Tao Beach, Thailand

When the sun casts its golden hues over the Andaman Sea, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket rises lavishly behind me – it’s hard to imagine this place as a once-abandoned tin mine. Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket isn’t just one of six world-class hotels at Laguna Phuket; it’s also the first to grace this revived land, sparking its transformation into Asia’s premier resort destination.
Dusit Thani may have started as the modest Princess Hotel in Bangkok in 1948, but today, it spans continents, bringing the essence of ‘Town in Heaven’—its name’s meaning—to destinations worldwide. And on the shores of Bang Tao Beach, the modern Thai luxury hospitality brand exudes an elegant coastal charm, shaded by native casuarinas and coconut palms, that fully immersed me in its grandeur.
Getting There
Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, easily accessible by Grab or a hotel-arranged transfer for added convenience. While traffic jams are not common in this area, it’s wise to allow an extra 15–20 minutes for possible slow-moving traffic in the early afternoon, when most flights to Phuket arrive.
A Part of Laguna Phuket
From abandoned tin mine to Asia’s premier integrated destination, Laguna Phuket is a remarkable 1,000-acre oasis home to world-class resorts. Checking into any of the six resorts unlocks a world of dining, shopping, and wellness options nearby. Start the day with morning yoga at Laguna Park or tee off at the scenic 18-hole golf course, then fuel up with lunch at Canal Village before pampering yourself at the award-winning spas. Invest in health rejuvenation at the BDMS Wellness Clinic or soak in nature with gentle walks and tranquil boat rides around the sparkling lagoons.
The Rooms at Dusit Thai Laguna Phuket
Although some upgrades were underway during our stay, there was no impact from the noise or dust. In fact, the 245-room and villa resort remained the sanctuary of tranquility it was designed to be. Rooms here start at 32 sqm with oceanfront, sea, and lagoon views, while the spacious two-bedroom pool villas go up to 292 sqm. We loved the club rooms and suites on the ground floor, each with a private garden or terrace—perfect for soaking in the sea breeze or stargazing at night. For families or larger groups, the two-bedroom pool villa has a kitchen with all the necessary tools for light cooking and boasts a rooftop infinity pool!
Our Premier Oceanfront room featured a private balcony with serene views of Casuarina trees and the beach. Grab a coffee and step outside in the morning to enjoy the gentle lapping of the waves—a tranquil start to the day. Inside, the 32 sqm room showcases a refined neo-colonial design with dark wood, marble furnishings, a plush queen bed, and a bathroom equipped with both a shower and bathtub
The Food and Amenities
The five-star resort is also home to the Michelin-recognized restaurant, Benjarong. Serving up Thai cuisine fit for royalty, Chef Boonram draws inspiration from Thai classic literature in his craft and honours traditional flavours with Thai herbs, fresh local ingredients, and authentic cooking techniques. Importance is placed on both flavours and presentation; expect flaming lobster dishes and live-action papaya salad made right on the spot. Even plain rice is served differently! The charming teak house restaurant is nestled in a garden and overlooks the lagoon, dining here is a treat for the senses. Cooking classes are available here, enquire for more information.
The lively yet somewhat enclosed beach is a big draw for guests at Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket. It’s not private but offers enough privacy to just chill and relax. Just beyond the beach resort, rustic beach bars beckon with a small menu of classic cocktails. These rustic pop-up bars might make for great photo spots, but keep in mind they aren’t affiliated with the resort—so enjoy responsibly! Instead, order your drink from La Trattoria, the resort’s Italian beachfront restaurant for quality and taste assurance. This is where to feast on authentic Italian pastas and pizzas, alongside a selection of mains like the Pan Fried Duck Breast.
Beyond the beach, the family-friendly pool invites guests of all ages to slide in or relax by the poolside. Otherwise, take it slow and stroll around the lush resort or along the beach. For special occasions, reach out to the friendly staff and arrange an exclusive, intimate beach dinner for an unforgettable evening
