Rockin’ Good Times

Join three quirky rock and pop acts, The Zozi, The Fridays and Cockpit, as they put a spring in your step and a smile on your face. In this weekend leading up to Esplanade’s Flipside festival, which celebrates the lighter side of the arts, let the fun begin and the good times roll.

Formed in 2007, The Zozi present the most comical way of interpreting music. Influenced by local bands of the ’90s, such as Boredphucks, Force Vomit and Plainsunset, the band performs music with a sense of honesty and a refreshing lack of pretentiousness, as evident by their simple and accessible themes for their songs. With a repertoire of songs which include titles like Cheeseburger and Mat Rempit, the subject matter and lyrics of their songs are easily lapped up by the fans.

Since their breakthrough gig at a Straits Records event in 2009, the band has performed at Baybeats (2010), Night Festival (2012), and at overseas gigs in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Johor Bahru. They are well received by audiences with their peerless music-writing.

Fueled by junk food, sodas, boredom and the undying belief that pop music can save the world, The Fridays positions themselves as a band of easily satisfied simpletons who produce catchy indie pop with substance, infused with punk rock and pop art. Their songs can be described as optimistic sparkling ’80s pop, laced with absurdist ironic ’90s.

The Fridays comprises Acap F, the brooding bedsit thinker; Yazid Beruang, the local pinup boy; Afniaz ‘Kakak’ Afiq, the scene queen; Pak Iran Squire, the guitar anti-hero; Muhammad Said, the smooth operator and Wan Bellon, the child prodigy.

Embracing the sound and look of ’80s hard rock and metal bands with a dash of ’90s geek culture and a large wink, Cockpit pride themselves in being able to present bone-crushing riffs and face-melting, harmonised guitar solos in a family-friendly and light hearted manner.

The boys stand poised to bring the thunder and mayhem of rock and metal back to the fore. Their performances will leave a smile on your face while their tunes linger in your ears for days.
