Say u-hu! to The U Factory creative pop up at Gillman Barracks

Calling all creatives and hipsters….you’re about to get a new home! The U Factory, an experimental pop up creative concept modelled on Andy Warhol’s Factory concept, which brought together the world’s very best creative individuals (and quite frankly anything to do with Andy Warhol gets double cool points in our book) is about to unfold at Gillman Barracks.

From November 2013 to January 2014, the folks behind Underscore magazine and creative consultancy HJGHER are on a mission to bring together an eclectic mix of trail-blazers in art, film, music, food, design and culture in one big celebration of independent craft – so basically all the things we love at City Nomads!

These creative heads have dreamed up a series of exhibitions, events, workshops, parties and happenings for your pleasure as well as a curated marketplace where you can pick up wares and creations from Factory ‘residents’.

Here are some of the highlights you can look forward to:

  • Monocle, the globally renowned uber-cool media house (yes that’s even in our book!), is setting up a pop-up retail store where visitors can sip hand-crafted drinks from rotating guest baristas and enjoy a library of international independent magazines.
  • Local music label Kitchen Label, home to acts sonicbratasphidistrafly and hang up the moon, will hold their first ever Singapore showcase in December.
  • Creative Cultures, a retail gallery, will showcase the work of local designers, authors, artists and musicians including furniture from Grafunkt and Foundry, kitchenware from Supermama and Hans Tan, stationery from FARM and records from Objectifs.
  • Singapore-based artist Boedi Widjaja will be exhibiting some of his drawings, as well as creating ‘Drawing Cage’, an interactive, immersive art exhibition.
  • Maison Ikkoku (one of our fave cafe and bars in Kampong Glam) will be serving up an all-day breakfast menu, followed by cocktails in the evening.
  • Preparazzi will be launching its home bakers’ studio by day, where the public can sample delicious baked goods fresh out-of-the-oven and try their hand at getting involved. By night its pop-up Laksa Bar takes over, dishing up innovative twists on the favourite local dish.

And if you’re not satisfied with just lapping up the creativity, but want to be the one dishing it out from the factory, potential residents and interested parties your time is now – email [email protected].
