Singapore Lyric Opera is excited to announce its newest production this season; Double Bill Operas: Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci & Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi which will be held at the Esplanade theatre and runs from 10 to 12 of September.
With a renowned international cast and directed by the critically acclaimed Tom Hawkes, expect to be blown away by the roller coaster of emotions that will be sure to leave the audience in tears and laughter.
Pagliacci tells the tale of a jealous man who is unable to control his emotions when he became aware that his wife is planning on leaving him for her lover. Tragedy ensues when the performance mirrors real life, which results in the eventual double murder. Canio/Pagliacci is played by South Korean tenor, Lee Jae Wok and Nedda, his wife by the Japanese soprano, Sachiko Ito; who will be supported by Filipino tenor, Lemuel Dela Cruz and Singaporean baritone, Martin Ng.
Gianni Schicchi, by comparison, is a more lighthearted production. The death of a wealthy man brings together his relatives who are all vying for his alleged estates. After realising that they will not be given the bulk of his finances, they entrusted Schicchi to help them find a way around the will. This production features one of opera’s most beloved arias, “Oh, mio babbino caro”, sung by the New Zealand soprano, Marlena Decoe as Lauretta. English baritone Adrian Clarke sings Schicchi and Rinuccio is sung by Lee Jae Wok with the English mezzo soprano, Sarah Pring as the matriarch of the grasping relatives. Other roles are sung by Sachiko Ito, Lemuel Dela Cruz and Martin Ng.
The Double Bill runs at the Esplanade Theatre from 10th to 12th Sept 2015, 8pm. Tickets start at $28 and can be purchased through SISTIC [here](http://www.sistic.com.sg/events/puccini0915).
