Suprette: Where cool and comfort food still kicks it

It’s a mystery why we hadn’t gotten around to giving Suprette its very own review until this moment in time, considering how many times collectively the writers at City Nomads must have eaten there. Maybe it’s because we had already shone the spotlight on it at City Nomads in our list of best burgers in Singapore and best weekend brunches. But anyway, the time is now, and here it is!
One of the first eateries to ride the new wave of Jalan Besar cool, Suprette is tucked away in a corner of the Kam Leng Hotel. There’s a very different type of 5 C’s at work here: compact, cool, cosy, comfort food and (retro) chic.
Serving up breakfast every day of the week til 2.30pm plus easy lunch and dinner offerings, here is our pick of what to order:
The Suprette Burger ($20)- this has to be on the top of everyone’s list when a visit to Suprette is on the cards. This is truly a burger to write home about. Fantastically juicy beef patty which just oozes with flavour from the first bite, and amazingly stays together in hand (despite its size!) this is just how a good burger should be, and we love it! If you’re not into a meat-feast, check out Dean’s Veggie Burger ($17) instead – a happy marriage of portabello mushroom, pumpkin mash, zucchini and capsicum.
We love how something that sounds so simple – Baby Spinach Salad with Poached Egg ($12)- can actually hit the spot so well for a lunch time outing. We have a sneaky suspicion that it’s something to do with the warm bacon dressing which really makes this dish.
If you’re stopping by for breakfast, be sure to order their Shakshuka ($19). We’re a sucker for this Mediterranean-inspired breakfast dish which sees eggs poached in a spicy tomato sauce with feta cheese and lamb sausages all combined together in one fabulous mess to be mopped up with a side of crusty bread. We’re also big fans of the Spiced French Toast ($14) which if you’re more inclined to the sweeter side, does just the trick with its marriage of brioche, berry compote and golden syrup.
It’s not often that you see Welsh Rarebit ($12) on any menu in Singapore, and if you’re wondering what that is, it’s basically a fancy name for cheese on toast. Having practically grown up on this I can tell you there is something fantastically indulgent and comforting about this ever so simple dish. It’s that gooey Gruyere cheese that’s the culprit here, and with homemade baked beans, we’re talking some serious stodge which will probably shake off any weekend hangover in a jiffy! Wash it down with a silky smooth Latte ($4.50) and you’ll be laughing.
Suprette may have been one of the first hipster eateries to set up shop in the now very happening Jalan Besar, but with competition biting hot on its heels, it will always remain one of our firm favourites for food that satisfies nostalgic yearnings at pocket friendly prices.
