The Weekly Grub: 11 May – 17 May
PUBLISHED May 13th, 2015 02:00 am | UPDATED June 24th, 2020 08:30 pm
This week, we’re delighted to share decadent offerings from two of our favourite bars, traditional Chinese goodies, wholesome bento boxes, and a brand new dessert concept (that isn’t anything froyo or waffle related)!
Sugarhall’s Exclusive Rum
Released in conjunction with its one-year anniversary, this Sugarhall exclusive is aged in cask #167 from the now-defunct Caroni Estate distillery in Trinidad. Think rich, fruity aromas countered by the zest of lemon and lime; on top of notes of treacle toffee and cloves – you can understand why Sugarhall’s Berry’s Finest Caribbean Rum has gotten us all excited. We’ve heard that this fine rum has a limited run of 240 bottles ($240++ per bottle) and will only be served until 31st May 2015, so be sure to head down to Sugarhall for your next drink!
The Black Swan launches Afternoon Tea
Looking for a cool place for that midday meetup with your BFF or to take that stuffy business meeting out of the office? Well, make sure The Black Swan is on your radar. With a new Afternoon Tea menu featuring scrumptious offerings such as homemade Scones ($20), Coconut Crème Caramel ($14), and Toby’s Estate coffee in a rich custom ‘The Black Swan’ blend, this chic Art-Deco styled bistro will provide that breath of fresh air you’ve been looking for.
Dragon Boat Festival at the Fullerton Hotel
The upcoming Dragon Boat Festival really only means one thing – zongzi, aka delectable glutinous rice dumplings. We savoured The Fullerton Hotel‘s classic Five Grain Pork Glutinous Rice Dumpling in Hometown Style ($9.80), which features succulent chunks of diced pork, shiitake mushrooms, and chestnuts. If you’re thinking of gifting some dumplings to parents or in-laws, the Hong Kong Style Abalone Glutinous Rice Dumpling ($48) with two 10-head abalones, roast duck, and dried scallops is sure to be an indulgent hit.
#eatclean with Lean Bento
Those who love to #eatclean listen up – Lean Bento has landed in The Arcade! This venture between best friends Charles Ng and Dionis Chiua is distinctive in its sincerity to provide cleaner and healthier food options while being forward with their ingredient transparency. What impressed us was the pure, clean flavour of the succulent chicken patties in the Parmesan Chicken Bento ($11.90), which are made from freshly minched chicken breast and steeped in organic broth. The best part? Each wholesome bento box tallies up to under 450 kcal, so you know you aren’t overeating. If you’re in the area, Lean Bento is worth popping by for their high-fibre muffins (we fancy the melon and cheese option, no matter how atypical that sounds) and their alkaline matcha that will prove to be wholesome pick-me-ups on a lazy day.
New Trend: Frozen Custard
Move over, Korean soft-serve and Spanish frozen yoghurt. First time in Singapore, Density serving a type of super-premium ice cream, with a century’s worth of history behind it. First served along the boardwalks of Coney Island, New York, this dessert is made with natural ingredients such as milk, cream and eggs, and owes its lusciously creamy texture to the extremely low level of air incorporated. Starting from $4 a scoop with signature flavours like Madagascar Vanilla, Red Velvet, and Black Forest, Density’s offerings will satiate the cravings of anyone with a sweet tooth.
