Top 5 Things to Do This Week: 10 to 16 November 2014

This week’s pickings are rather heavy on the drinks and the theatre – two of the biggest loves in our lives, really. From drinking sake from a barrel and a wine festival to a Shakespearean play and a freedom-focused film festival, check out our top 5 things to do this week:

For Fans of Bincho at Hua Bee – Bincho’s First Anniversary

Bincho at Hua Bee is celebrating their first birthday with a bang – literally – cause they’ll be kicking things off with a Kagami-Biraki, a traditional ceremony where a sake barrel is broken with hammers. Best part? You get to drink as much as you want, until the barrel is empty! Food-wise, guests can expect a special seven-course menu, which includes Chef Asai Masashi’s signature yakitori, chargrilled beef tongue with garlic, and chicken liver mirin pate. You’ll definitely have to book ahead to snag seats at this special occasion.

Bincho’s First Anniversary Celebration is happening 12 November 2014, 7pm, at #01-19 Moh Guan Terrace, Singapore 162078. For more information, see their Facebook Page.

For Fans of The Bard – A Midsummer’s Night Dream

Those who love Shakespeare should already have bought their tickets. A drama-comedy consisting of three sub-plots, the common thread in this Shakespearean play is the irrationality of love – lovers of every sort, every creature, and every class can behave very ridiculously. Combining Renaissance costumes and staging, a stellar cast, and some of Shakespeare’s most dazzling dramatic poetry, this staging of A Midsummer’s Night Dream by Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre going to be a great show. Check out our feature for more details.

A Midsummer’s Night Dream is running 13-16 November 2014 at Esplanade Theatre. For more information and tickets, see SISTIC.

For (strong) Proponents of Human Rights – Freedom Film Festival

Curated by indie film-maker Lynn Lee, the Freedom Film Festival will be screening inspiring local and international shorts, films, and documentaries like Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable Elements of Belarus, 3.50, and Lessons in Dissent. There will also be Q&A sections after every screening session for an intellectual powwow. Prominent speakers like Alvin Tan (founder of The Necessary Stage) will also be engaging the audience by sharing their experiences and thoughts on human rights.

Freedom Film Festival is happening 15-16 November 2014 at The Arts House, 1 Old Parliament Lane, Singapore 179429. For more information, see their Facebook Page.

For Wine Lovers – Big Wine Review

Ewineasia.com, one of the biggest online wine retailers, is having their 10th anniversary celebration this weekend. On top of other foodie events like an Italian wine-paired dinner and a Sunday sparkling brunch, wine lovers should head down to the Big Wine Review, where you’ll get to sample over 100 different wines from renown wineries. 17 winemakers will also be at the event to share more about their wines. In line with the ‘Wine Discovery theme’, event-goers can even plan their own wine tasting trails, such as from Portugal to Spain.

Big Wine Review is happening 15 November 2014, 1pm-5pm, at APS Lifestyle Gallery, 9 Muthuraman Chetty Road, Singapore 238931. For more information, see website. RSVP at [email protected] or call 6222 3977.
