WICKED – Worth a Visit?

After a very elegant cocktail reception hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Canon and Marina Bay Sands. B and I headed for a quick revisit to Pita Pan for some delicious pre-show falafel and pita (article here) before sprinting down to the theatre to make the show on time! This is the first time I’d been to the theatre at Marina Bay Sands and was rather excited for the evening’s event…

Whilst I am not usually a fan of musicals, I had to admit that after seeing WICKED in London some 6-8 years ago, I was super-impressed and was now very excited that there would be a performance in our very own Lion City!

So if you’ve never seen or heard of Wicked, here is a brief synopsis in my own words: It’s effectively a postmodern adaptation and sub-story of the famous Wizard of Oz, except this time telling the life-story of the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’, Elphaba, played superbly in this production by Jemma Rix.

In essence, it takes you through her early life, dealing with issues of trying to fit in ( being the only green girl in school for a start!), friends, family, betrayal and of course, love.

Not to go to much into detail of the plot, trust that it’s a fantastic story, well written, and brilliantly performed! Jemma Rix as Elphaba was excellent, as was Suzie Mathers who plays Glinda the Good.

If you’re familiar with the story and the songs, you may find yourself getting very excited at the critical moments….In fact, I’m pretty sure i’ve had ‘Defying Gravity’ stuck in my head for about a week now! Oh the embarrassment i’ve caused myself singing it in public.

On CityNomads, we usually promote the lesser-known events going on in Singapore, but it doesn’t hurt to big-up the mainstream sometimes, and in this case, I would highly recommend going to see WICKED if you haven’t already. You won’t regret it!

Wicked will be showing at MBS until the 1st April. As a London-raised chap myself, I can say with sincerity and experience that the performance here is WORLD-CLASS!
