The Sultan Jazz Club – Smooth Whisky – even smoother Jazz

When it comes to jazz in Singapore…let’s face it, there aren’t exactly many options….However, quite amazingly in the past few years there’s been a resurgence of this once universally popular genre…One place in particular that offers almost nightly jazz performances is the relatively new Sultan Jazz Club at the Sultan Hotel on Jalan Sultan in the Arab quarter.

Ever since I fist visited this destination as its former entity, Pasha, it left an impression. There’s just something so silky smooth about it…it’s no wonder that it has now become a centre for jazz and other funky live music. What a perfect match.

Upon entering there is usually a small admission charge of around $10-20, but it’s well worth it. The quality of music is simply excellent. Given the atmosphere, decor, music and drinks, you could easily lose sense of space and time and transport yourself to an intimate Jazz club in London or New York from decades ago. It’s quite surreal in that sense…and very, very cool.

As for the food and drinks offering, sadly gone are the days of tasty Moroccan platters being served up, instead now you’ll find cheese platter or cold cuts. Nothing exciting but decent to keep you going. Honestly though, just get dinner beforehand…Here, it’s all about the drink, and at Sultan Jazz Club, Whisky is King.

Since my last visit here, the whisky selection has expanded massively and is now somewhere I would genuinely consider as a veritable destination for whisky lovers, even to rival the likes of La Maison du Whisky, B28 or Auld Alliance. I’m talking about a selection of not dozens, but hundreds of whiskies. And if you like jazz as well, then this is the perfect place for you.

Guys (and girls of course), this is the kind of place where you suit up, go to with your buddies after a lush steak dinner, arrive in style, order some superb whisky and sit on the balcony smoking fine Cuban cigars (available there if you like) as you soak in the music.

On the drinkside, if whisky is not your bag, there is a full selection of alternatives, though I can’t say I was massively impressed with the cocktails. My advice – stick with the liquors and you’ll be riding.

Be warned, the schedule (http://www.sultanjazzclub.com/schedule/) only shows what’s happening that week so be sure to visit often to see their full line up…Of course, over at City Nomads we pick out a few weekly and list them over at http://www.citynomads.com/events as well 😉
